building a splicing desk

Now I've got to replace the snares on my wands and get 'em up on treebay. Used to use em all the time......they haven't seen the light of day in probably a year and a half. A basket fid looks like it would kill the last use I have for 'em.

Just the 12 steps my wife takes kicking my butt whenever another box shows up. I made the mistake of asking her for tree stuff for Christmas, now she knows what all this stuff costs, ha ha.

All I know how to splice is 3-strand, but it's a damn gateway drug. I'm itching to try my hand at other stuff. Been filling cart with splicing stuff. Planning out bench arrangement and construction in garage. Reading these damn forums. Prepare yourselves for lots of dumb questions when I get ready to start.

When I go to buy stuff when I know I shouldnt, I just think that if somebody hacked my checking account tomorrow and took everything, they wouldn't have as much if I bought everything in my cart today. :) makes sense if u don't think about it.

Hey ML, u wanna sell ur RR?

A heavy duty splicing bench is on my list of winter projects. I usually splice sitting down, then tie off to a tree outside to send them home.
I'm curious how many routinely splice at a stand up table or bench? Better than sitting?

I like sitting on my high-topped stool. I also like my wood-working vice at the end of the bench because I can use it to clamp almost anything, including the end of the core or cover, the end of the wire fid, or the metal post for 16-strand splices. I screwed the post to a short piece of 4x4 so I can clamp it into the vise when I need it and store it out of the way when I don't need it. The main thing is to anchor the bench so it will not move when you pull hard to bury a 16-strand splice. If you can't anchor the bench, then anchor your cleat to something else that will not move.
