Building a removable chip box for my aluminum flatbed.

I have an F450 with a nice aluminum flatbed and a gooseneck hitch on it. I use my big gooseneck dump quite a bit with this truck, but now I want to be able to use it as a chip truck once in a while as well.

I am working on a design for a chip box that can be easily removed when I want just a flatbed. It will be aluminum, completely self contained and easily removed with jacks that slide into it. Jack it up and drive out from under it. The dumping will actually be done by a winch so you just have to unplug it and you are done.

Hopefully it works well. On paper it does. Metal fab is a hobby of mine, so it shouldn't cost too much to do. I will post pictures as I go if anybody wants to see it. It won't hold a ton of chips, but it will be about 7.5 feet wide, 5 feet tall and 7 feet long. I will still have room between it and the cab for gear storage which will be in slide out boxes on each side.

Anybody ever done something like this?

Sounds like you are fabing a dump insert, perhaps making it a little easier to mount/dismount from the truck. Should be fairly easy. You could also buy a junker dump trailer, and take the trailer frame/axle off. I've been looking at dump inserts a bit lately, and I found a truck with one bolted straight to the frame.

Just build a dedicated chip truck and trade me your gooseneck dump for my big pintle dump. It's 20x8 with 4 ft sides. Problem solved!
