Break testing

I am looking for the best place to have testing done on some of my splices. What is the best way to go about this? I heard a rumor that Sherrill may be looking into offering a facility for this very thing.

Also does anyone have any experience with testing the strength of a longer than recommended core bury vs. a shorter than recommended bury?

JDT, I started a forum here on the splice rack called "Had some splices tested!" I did an HRC eye n eye hitch cord w/two different bury lengths, 3" and 7". All the results are on that forum, pictures and break testing graphs. Also in there I think I mention that I used Knot and Rope Supply up in Perrysburg, Ohio, not sure if theyre close to you or not. $20 a splice test. Maybe that'll get you started...

Thanks Tyler, K&RS is about 2 hrs from me and I'm going to try to get up there next week some time. I was unaware they offered that service. I read your thread a while ago but some how missed where you got them tested.

Hi Norm,

Yep, when we run those the machine is hooked up to a load cell that feeds data constantly to a computer which monitors the load force and time under load. That way you can see how long the test is vs. the amount of force on the rope.

It is especially interesting to see any jumps or slips due to any shifts in the eye splice as the rope approaches the breaking point, it shows all that.

When it is all over we print those out and you get that.....and some exploded rope.......

All for $20. That's a heck of a deal. I was paying more than that quite a few years ago, with documentation. I hope you keep offering that option John. It's great for the industry. Thank you.
