Not an arborist fatality, but it makes a point I tried to make yesterday when I watched a friend ascend to about 20 feet, unsecured, in a tree. "You need to be secured anytime you are off of the ground." This kid fell only 6 feet and died as a result of his injuries.

BELVILLE, NC (WECT) - According to a family friend, 9-year-old Teddy Hiatt died late Friday night after undergoing surgery. Hiatt fell about six feet from a tree in Belville last weekend. He had been in a coma since his fall.

The community overwhelmed Teddy's mother, Heather Skipper, with donations and support after finding out he did not have health insurance.

Doctors performed surgery on Teddy Thursday and were able to relieve a lot of pressure in his brain. But, a family friend said doctors told the family Friday that his organs had shutdown and he had lost all brain activity. He died late Friday night.

His mother donated his organs, which helped save the lives of 8 other children.

A visitation service will be held for Teddy on Tuesday from 6-8pm at the Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home in Southport.

Teddy's funeral will be Wednesday at 4pm at the First Baptist Church in Oak Island.
