Bow and arrow

Does anyone have any good advise on using compound bows for tree entry? My string breaks constantly. I want a better set up and would like some idea of what parts would make my system work well. Thank you for your help.

If you're using fishing line, I'd go with SpiderWire or similar, 100 pound test or better. Assuming you are in an area where it isn't illegal to be using a compound bow (cops and judges frown on using a bow in residential areas). /forum/images/graemlins/aaa.gif

My only concern is that the weight of the fishing line shortening the distance of the arrow I 'm already using weighted fishing arrows that are fiber glass. No this is in the woods I live on a farm with 90 acres plus its almost hunting season. Can't afford to loose my expensive toy.

Howdy,

What is the weight of your arrow? A 28" solid fiberglas shaft with a slip-on rubber field blunt yields 3.3 ozs.

This weight will bring down an arrow from a branch over 150' high with lightweight line. Rocky's suggestion of 100# line may require a heavier arrow for reliable return to earth under gravity power. This will decrease the height of your throw.

'Fireline' 30# test line made by Berkeley is a good, beefy high modulus fiber choice. You can use 20#, or even 15# weight to get extra distance. Keep the spool full to the point of overflowing to allow the line to run off the spool without drag.

A stuck arrow will require that you break the line to allow it to drop. The heavier lines can cause problems in this department. A spare spool that can be popped on your reel is a handy option when abandoning a birds nest of tangled line.

Thanks for the info! Now if you got a design for an arrow that will fall apart into a square target so I can retrieve it with my grappel slingshot ammo. Have you tried to get any higher than 150' with an arrow? I've set a 275' traverse with an arrow. That was a fun one!
