Looks like an asplundh LR-IV.

I know you mean Altec. I think you are right, it's the older model with the cables on the outside of the lower boom.

I'm just wondering if there are any other photos of booms that have broken to compare this to. I find it hard to believe that fiberglass would break in what appears to be a pretty clean circle. It looks like some one took a pipe cutter to the boom where it broke. I would think fiberglass would splinter and banana in some fashion. Is it possible this boom was sabotaged in any way? It sucks to think that could happen, but it could.

Did the fiberglass break? or did the boom come out of a socket at the knuckle?

definitely not an LR-IV... looks like he might have walked if he had a lanyard on.. tough to say though.. the boom might have hit the chip box with the swing. One thing for sure though is he would have had a mcuh better chance if he had a lanyard and hard hat. New regulations are a 2' lanyard to a standard climbign belt is acceptable.. no need for a dorsal attachment with a short lanyard like that. 2' is a little short for reaching etc.. I go with just under 3' to the side D of my saddle. Not quite regulation, but its fast and easy so I ALWAYS use it and it will do the trick if needed IMO.

Hard to understand what he was doing when the boom snapped as it looks like he was straight up (or close to it) from the lower boom, putting him nowhere near the tree..

Daniel, I know you said you don't think it's an LR-IV, but it does look like an over-center Altec, and If so, I think he was flipping the boom over for more reach. I own a newer LR-IV, and do this alot. From the looks of your orange bucket, mine is the same Asplundh unit as yours.

I believe Ashplundh still made them when they came out with the LR-IV, I'm not sure when they sold to Altec.

Hate to tell you this but you're wrong there Daniel, an LR-III has a narrow mast that rotates from just above the subframe and cables to go over center, an LR-V uses a chain to go over center on the upper boom it also has a square lower boom which makes this one an LR-IV as it has 2 round booms, cables to go over center and a large mast which rotates from just below the lifting cylinder.
