Black chipper overheats

A friend of mine has a Bandit drum chipper...I don't know what model, but its BIG!

The engine has high temp shut down switches to save the engine.

When a large trunk is put into the chipper it will overheat and shut down like its supposed to. The catch...it takes time to cool down.

The chipper is painted black. I wonder how much this might affect the cooling capacity?

Of course...some investigating the cooling system needs to be checked, it might be just clogged radiator fins.

Question is though...is chipper color that big a deal?

not sure how much of an effect it would have on the unit ,but i would not have it painted black anyways . as you know black attracts heat and stays hot longer . plus it is better to have your chipper painted safety orange for when you are on the road especially at night . there is a product called water wetter , made by a company called redline . it is used in race cars and high proformance engines . it will keep your engine running 20 degrees cooler and lubricant the water pump and help prevent corrosion inside the rad.......... hope this helps !

Don't think black has much to do with it. I've talked to a few guys about Bandit and they all said they have raditor problems and that they're chipper always ran hotter than it should. Buddy of mine, when his rad blew way too early, he had a custom one built from copper and brass, and he said no more heat problems. It runs about 20-30 degrees cooler on avg he said.
