big shot max height

Throwback launcher:

This works pretty well. It goes 100 feet. I want to make it a bit more compact. It really is a complication of the whole process, but it's fun. I destroyed my skateboard to make it. :( which I am sad about. I am working on a double band version to see if that works at all.

Just FYI
There have been comments in the past about the bands being on the TOP Vs BOTTOM of the Big Shoot pole.
The thought was, if the bands break, the bottom location might be safer. (face impact !)
Maybe you could groove the wheels to help position the bands.

Shortening the bands, while using the same pull length would increase the applied force.
Be careful: band attachment mechanism, band breakage, trigger holding strength, etc.

There I actually a story now on Facebook about a guy using a makeshift pole with the big shot. The pole broke and put him in a coma with a broken skull.

I can see it now Kevin, eccentric cams, sighting pins or scopes, mechanical releases....oh wait that is my archery equipment. Might be a concept in there though.

The whole problem with this concept is that I haven't yet found anything that really beats throwing by hand for the trees I have to work with

Have you tried throwing backwards over your head ?
I have seen a couple very good TCC competitor use this technique.

But I digress ...................
You just started !
The compact concept is worth the "price of admission" !

That is pretty slick, Kevin! You know, looking at that it would only take a few tweaks and you could but the bands inside the tube. Same concept just more streamlined.

That is a good idea. I have been looking at my 300$ telescoping ladder that telescopes down to one foot. I am so tempted to take it apart. But it is a nice ladder. Then I would be without a skateboard and a ladder.

Speaking of compact, what about making a slingshot that you put a stirrup on each foot that the bands are hooked to, lay on the ground, and then pull and fire?

Wear a cup and hope you don't have to run away from bees while using it...

I've broken slingshot tubing a few times, it always breaks where the tubing is joined to the pouch, that is the weak link in the chain as far as the tubing goes. When it breaks nothing happens to the operator, in fact I've had them break and the bag still launched nicely. Breaking poles is another matter.

I've been wanting to build a compact slingshot like that for a long time, never got it together. Nice work Kevin!

All this talk about the complexities of pole length, rubber density, thow weights, temperature, air pressure, and danger of head injury is making me dizzy. I will stick to my old Horton Legend crossbow and 50lb test Tuffline. I can make bolts for about 2 bucks each and I can consistently rig to about 200' with much better accuracy than is possible with a slingshot (at least with my limited skillset). I understand the problems with crossbows in international travel, but for rigging big trees here in the Pacific Northwest I think a good crossbow is still the best tool there is.
