Bid that tree!

First time for everything
Customer calls for an estimate and tells the office “He has a price in mind” I’m not sure what he meant but I’ve already have a chip on my shoulder from the stupid statement.
So when I show up I see that the h.o started cutting on the crimson then I noticed he destroyed his fence the notice that he cut into the base both sides approximately 2-3” each side and stopped to call a professional I suppose.
Probably a 18-20” diamond but JEEZ!
Some people
After reading “I already have a price in mind” I thought your post was going to lead to how much he would sell the wood to you for. He must have really swallowed some pride to even make the call.

Reminds me of when we got an “emergency” call at dinner time from our former social studies teacher. I asked if it was a come-tomorrow-morning type of emergency or a come-right-now kind. He said “You better come now”.

18” Oak, fairly straight but definitely leaning over his garage. He had already tried 12 ways until Sunday to cut into the trunk. I said we better put a pull line in it and for a proper face cut and back cut. Threw the throwline into the crown and it was shaking so much I didn’t dare try to install a rope. My brother just pulled the two sides of throwline while I formed the cut below all the other guy’s attempts.

I finished the back cut and said “pull”, only to watch the tree snap right in the midst of all his cuts. Thankfully the throwline was enough and it went into the lay. Upon looking at where it broke, there was a string of fibers the diameter of my thumb in dead center where his saw magically never touched and that was all that saved his garage (apart from our arrival).

I had one very similar to this. My buddies cousin bought a 880 (because it’s the biggest) and thought it made him super logger. I have a pic somewhere of the ‘attempt’.

I just set a line and ripped it over but that’s the carved turkey stump.

Here's one my neighbor did because he is too cheap to pay me for what would have taken 10 minutes to get on the ground. This was a 15' dead Ash spar with nothing in the drop zone, no targets in the pronounced lay, and still he used a ladder to remove the top 5' in 8" rounds. Well on second thought calling them "rounds" isn't totally accurate. Some were rhombus, some tetrahedron, some indescribable. That plus he has a burning desire to prove that he can do tree work too...... He gave up and this is next to the sidewalk now.

Dude, now just tell me your buddy’s cousin is named ‘Gus’.

I had a customer ask me for estimates on tree take downs and removals on his property 20 plus years ago, I had my climber check it out and he described the job as "crazy" as it was essentially clear cutting perfectly good trees. I regret not standing up to idiodic customers on cutting down nice apple trees as well as their irrational and unreasonable fears of well situated oak trees with zero real threat to their houses that one night in heavy winds their anxiety drove them later to get removed. I'm tired of pandering to city folks who move up to the suburbs and want to "make their mark" on properties they bought. I say add a "crazy tax" on unreasonable people wanting to cut down good trees and require permits with town tree wardens who are conservation-minded who will deny stupid take downs. The local tree warden's refrain is that tree work is not that profitable. Oh, really? It's the best money a landscaper or laborer will make compared to an hourly wage.

It's not just "city folks" who have weird issues with trees, and there are lots of people who live in cities who love trees and go too far in the other direction to protect them. It's more of a mindset than a matter of where people live.
