Best Pickup for dump trailer?

Hello,

I am currently towing my 7x14 dump trailer with my 2001 f350 SRW which is rated around 9000lbs towing I believe. Rarely do I overload the trailer past the trucks capacity but it has a capacity of 11000lbs which would bring its weight to about 14000lbs. I would like to be able to use the full capacity of my trailer with peace of mind. I am wondering if there is a good CHEAP truck that I can find used that is technically rated at 14000lbs that I should search for? (e.g. 2007 chevy 2500 is rated at 14000lbs look for one of those!) This is for legalities but also for ethical reasons like what if I get in an accident and someone gets hurt because the truck was towing too much. Thanks in advance!

Joey

Your f350 is only rated to tow 9k? My 97 is good for 14k according to the book. Problem is needing a class a cdl for any trailer over 10k here in nc. It's not heavily enforced but if you want to be on the up and up...

@Z'sTrees Yes I believe its around there. This is a 4x4, crew cab, gas, bumper pull. I'm not sure what your set up is. I see people pulling a lot more with a lot less but I just want to be safe and also not break my truck!

Watch the hitch as well as the truck. Many 2" receivers are rated at 10k, which puts the 14k trailer out of spec. The 2.5" receiver on my '11 srw 350 is rated at 12k. Still no bueno. So a 14k trailer should have a massive hitch on the pick up or a little more than a pickup. Do guys tow them around??? Absolutely! Is DOT gonna get them? If they wanna.

@flyingsquirrel25 Yeah I guess I'll just keep it light for now. Its weird that it comes in a bumper pull as a standard when it seems that its very unstandard for a bumper receiver to be rated at 14k. Mine is a custom bumper that came with the flatbed thats on their so I'm sure its beefed up BUT I don't know if that does anything unless the manufacturer (Reading?) some how got it approved by the DOT.

That would be a question for reading. Ask them what the hitch rating is on you specific model. From what I understand they are very easy to talk to. It definitely is not all that uncommon for a upfitter to put a heavy hitch plate on a cab chassis when mounting the body. All of the chip box companies do it for sure. It should be as simple as a phone call or email to get the rating.
One of the reasons I want to add another 450 or 550 to the fleet this year! Get away from the pick up towing all the time.

Interesting company with some good ideas for sure. As I am in the market for a couple of hitches I now have some to ponder over. Thank you for sharing that link.
