Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..anyone?

Looking at a Kong Duck belay device for $53 and then it seems it jumps to $225 for an I'D Descender.
Or standard figure 8 for 16.95.

Any advice?

Thanks

Re: Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..anyone?

it depends on what rope technique you are using. will you need a fast easy lock off? or are you looking to preserve your hitch cord?

Hello,

I think it really depends on what you're doing, like waldo said. Also, with some of the options, their prices may reflect their function, like the duck is mainly for ascent, but the I'D can be used to ascend and descend, I think...

Check out the the above link and you'll find an awesome resource regarding all types of mechanical rope ascenders and descenders.

If you want to work on the desender SRT the Petzl I'D is the way to go. Expensive but worth every penny, I use mine more than I use a traditional hitch.

Re: Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..anyone?

unicender or a rig.just dont use the uni on a small diam rope like velocity, tachyon is perfect.

Also look at the EDDY

Re: Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..any

its slips unless the uni is brand new.But the big issue is Ive actually had it come out of 2 of the 4 wraps on a couple different occasions.

Re: Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..any

never had the issue with tachyon,i dont think its really possible with the larger diam, but i could be wrong.

Newclimber,

Are you familiar with how the Duck works?

It's not a descender.

What SRT system/tools are you using now?

I've used the Uni on smaller than Tachyon diameter rope but I don't like how twitchy it is. Hard to set the descent speed with the smaller ropes. I've never had it come out of the clutches but I haven't climbed on small rope as much as Jimmy has.

Re: Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..any

Jushua,

do you have a unicender?

are you telling me it slips from experience or inference?

Re: Best mechanical descender for 1/2 \" rope ..any

The reason I ask about the Unicender and 11mm velocity is bcause this is what I often enter the tree with. My unicender must still be new enough to grab because I have not had any problems of slippage.

If it starts slipping I will just switch to using it with 1/2 inch line.
