BeechTree-Crane-Removal: The video

[ QUOTE ]

Reg, why the climb up instead of ride up?

Cory, riding the hook is ilegal over here mate, so I cant be seen to be doing it....and besides, it wasn't a long climb and also allows the opportunity to see what needs to be done. Thanks

A stud and a president....wow, and all I get called is a monkey or a squirrel. I guess I'm doing something wrong:)

Always like your vids.

Nice job Reg!

You did it again, Reg. Showed how to do it. That central lead was perfect for working the tree. A guy don't get that all the time.

Those Beech are really pretty trees. Thanks, Reg.

Thanks. I just had to do some cutting and make a couple of small lifts to establish that point shortly after the begining, but its always worth it for easy access throughout the canopy thereafter, plus the pendulum effect allows for a fast escape route should it ever come to that.

In truth, I spent most of the job with nothing much to do since the guys weren't untieing the slings until first stripping out the limbs and then craning the logs off to the side. On all but two lifts, my slinging involved minimal fuss so the rest of the time I was a mere spectator!

Beautiful rig at 5:29. Doesn't get much gentler than that.

Yeah baby!

Perfect touch.

Reg,

This may seem like a foolish question but that won't stop me from asking. In this vid and I think some others you have made the brush around your tie in spot has been removed. How do you do this? Hand bomb, butt hitch small pieces with the crane, just cut them? Just seems like it makes everyones life a little easier.

I thought of this a couple a days ago while doing a crane removal....just remembered now.

Thanks

All or either, whatever’s easiest.

What I appreciate most about crane work is the freedom that it affords a climber i.e. climb to the target – attach slings – cut….what could be simpler! It’s certainly a refreshing change from gear-intensive conventional rigging.

Stripping out a central lead can sometimes take a few minutes if it requires me to cut small and throw it down somewhere…. so I’ll look for a good size lift that’ll keep everyone busy so to buy me some time to deal with it.

I was interested to read Royce’s rope-bag thread and can appreciate the thinking where if a tree is too dangerous to climb out and attach the slings, then riding the crane to the attachment points, an/or using a bucket is the only way to go….but other than that, the idea of waiting idly to be lifted around different parts of a tree is not something I could ever justify, well, maybe when I get to about 80.

So yes, a central de-snagged lead allows for not only independent but also the easiest and quickest access to all your targets. Fundamental stuff at its very roots. Thanks

Thanks Reg.

We are not allowed to ride the crane here either so keeping the high central tie in point is pretty important. Just curious on how you did it.

Yeah sorry, I got a little carried away there. From memory I was able to make one small lift and then toss the rest down.

I dont mind bending the rules a now and then, but only when it makes better sense!
