Yeah nice video. Rocks and Trees you should come Providence in 09 we have some sweet beeches.

There is a fun side to bombing out large sections of the tree and there is a bad side to it... The clean up on the ground is a nightmare.

Did you guys have to clean up or not?

Got a question about the placement of the notch. Why so low? I know it is practical not to cut higher for a second stump cut and for the sake of harvesting lumber. But, if your were harvesting lumber would you have used a Humboldt?

I typically cut mine higher than the buttress of the trunk. Simply because I hate cutting into the angled/compressed grain and the splash back of small grains of sand get into the bark of the tree after all those years, which makes the saw dull. It seems a lot faster, that's all.

Just curious. Not getting up in your grill or anything.

good question. beech can get very brittle particularly when the wood is compromised. the best holding wood is always found in the buttress roots or "toes" as i reer to them as. i always fell low as possible on beech and utilize these toes, you can hold the tree on the hinge far better.....if you look at the end of the video when i panned the camera onto the bottom of the butt you will see where its held and tore the toe.

as for clean up, this was a "get it on the ground" job. the estate owner had sent a guy with a teleporter to literally just crush and push the runbbish out of the way.

Felling a Beech low is not always a good idea as I found out recently on a very brittle tree with a heavy lean, I should have cut higher leaving the buttress alone to support the tree as I cut.

Well yeah, not all of them but enough to make it stupidly dangerous.
