Beech Leaf Disease

I run a tree service company out on Long Island, New York. Recently we've been getting calls from clients with beech trees infected with Beech leaf disease. I've been doing some online research on the issue as its fairly new here, we've only just started seeing this within the past few years and its now becoming more prevalent. Figured I'd reach out and see if anyone has come up with a post infection treatment or preventative treatment plan to deal with this. The majority of the beech trees we take care of for clients are European Beech.

Seems as though the disease is caused by a "foliar-feeding nematode, Litylenchus crenata". Death usually occurs within 7 years. Currently I can't find any information on effective treatments.

Hi,
You'll find a long running commentary and the latest science here: https://www.treebuzz.com/forum/threads/beech-tree-leaves-dying.33333/

Definitely read through that long post. Lots of good info to be informed.

The short of it is there are zero effective treatments available at the moment but there is ongoing research and trialing.

Best option now is potassium phosphate fungicide drenches (like reliant or agri-phos) or a high potassium based fertilizer to boost the trees natural defenses. Monitor for secondary pests/disease capitalizing on a weaker tree to minimize multiple stressors and buy the tree some time.
