Quick and easy to tie in the bight. Have you used the knot in this midline application for life support? Does it need tension on both legs to keep from slipping or spilling? Will it jam? Seems like it would be OK to me...

I haven't even tried it yet. I was just throwing out options. If anything works, this would work.

The other bulkier option would be to tie a figure 8 on a large bight, then just girth hitch to the bight.

Do you have to use a large crotch? Once you are on the ground and you will have to pull at least one of those Ap butterflies/carabiners over the crotch without it getting stuck?
 
Yes, the yoke should be relatively open. I suppose a short stub or sprouts in the vicinity could cause trouble as well. I always make sure to have enough rope (or throwline attached to the end of the rope) to facilitate rocking the biners back and forth over the crotch, if necessary.
