beddes in ITCC?

treebing

Been here much more than a while
Location
Detroit, Mi.
can anyne describe what beddes did in the masters last year? I was not there, but i hear it was pretty slick and very simple. He used the access line and a couple of biners to create a false crotch somehow. can anyone describe this in detail?

There's a post about it here somewhere. My understanding of it is...

footlock up your access line to desired position

lanyard in

tie a midline knot (alpine butterfly) in each side of access line -below footlock prussik- and install appropriate carabiner in each knot

now you have a giant FC

install climbing line and undo prussik

I think a great application for this technique is in the aerial rescue. Not quite as fast as SRT but darn close.

So the access line was a double line, naturally hanging. Therefore one would have to be cautious as to how close to the crotch he approached with the prussic depending on branch diameter?

Sure. However, you don't need to get that close. Depends upon the tree and/or work station. I ascend a short distance above the highest point at which I'll be working. This technique is not necessarily the best choice for working the entire crown. If I only need to hit a few low or mid limbs it works quite well.

And you need to have a crotch big enough to pull one of the alpine butterflys plus carabiner through/over in order to retreive the set up. I've used it a few times it works well.

treebing, Beddes was awsome as was Mark, Kathy and really all the participants! Do a search here as there were some great pictures posted.

The setup was retrieved from the ground..His two carabiners on his access line (both ends on the ground) were essentially his false crotch. Once he came out of the tree, he pulled his line out of the 'biners and then pulled his access line (with a throwline attached to one end, in case it wouldn't go through the crotch the first time). Pretty cool.

He didn't have to "catch" a biner. The line with dual midline knots/biners was on the ground the whole time. Just put a throw line on one end in case you need to "work it"past the crotch the one biner is passing through. A simple and elegant technique.

Here are pics my girlfriend Margeaux and I took today. I've had my eye on this cottonwood for a while and this was a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the technique.

Lanyard in. Tie an alpine butterfly on each leg of access line. In this case, the limb is at head height and to be able to use my climbing line effectively I untie my footlock strop and install one ab first.

Run climbing line through first carabiner and send it up several feet by pulling the opposite side of the access line. Now I can tie the other alp.b. and clip my climbing line into it. Cinch up the climbing line and you will have the two carabiners(or giant friction saver as it were) a few feet above your head.
