Don't cut just to do something to the tree. A major cause of tree mortality in the urban landscape is over pruning. If it doesn't need something to benefit it's own health or achieve a goal for the owner, leave it alone.

Always firmly secure your climbing apparatus to the patient.

Leave the crown alone until the root system is assessed.
Know the genus species and cultivar and cultural requirements before you prune.

Yes and take before and after pics cuz when some people don’t see large cuts they think u didn’t do anything

Don't clean up until you're done. Easier to estimate volume removed, and not over prune.

Gilman is OK, mostly for young trees though. he doesn't have much to say in any detail about large trees..

Mature hardwoods, no live cuts on the main stem or stems

Know your location. Trees grow and behave differently in different climates.. I wouldn't prune a mature oak gilman style in the PNW. He is from Florida and they have a much longer growing season!

Agreed, but his work on structural for young trees is great.
