Bashlin Saddle XS bridge issues

Anybody have any ideas of what i can do to replace the bridge on my bashlin Saddle XS? (SEE PIC) the boss does not like the hardware that locks the webbing down back onto itself, he is concerned it will come undone and wants a closed bridge system.

I have had ZERO issues with the hardware, in fact it is pretty damn impossible to loosen the webbing, even when the webbing is unloaded (ie: at home, and with no weight). The webbing is rated for 5000lbs MBS, and the saddle is rated for arborists by WCB, ANSI & OSHA. The Hardware that secures the red webbing is rated for 5000lbsMBS and is standard webbing securing hardware.

I was thinking of replacing the webbing with a short Eye & Eye rope bridge, fastened to the triangular attachment points with Loctited (red) Maillion Rapid oval connectors, and a steel ring for the tie in point.

this is what i had in mind: http://www.buckinghammfg.com/arborist/images/w2%20strap.jpg

any other suggestions??? i really dont mind buying another tree saddle, but the Bashlin Saddle XS is a VERY comfortable saddle that i really like when in the trees, both Spur and spurless climbing....

thoughts?

maybe get a smaller rope like that red coated tecnora its stiffer and tie it with double fishermans-rich h may still have some.

???????????????????

this is the webbing that came WITH the saddle. The webbing passes thru the buckles TWICE. its not coming out. To adjust or remove it i have to pretty much cut it, as it is impossible to feed thru the buckles.

Kevin - the web buckle is metal, rated for 5000lbs MBS. They are used in a wide variety of Rope Access saddle connections, approved by OSHA, ANSI and WCB .

isnt there a guy on this site the is known for his rope splices, you should just get a beeline cord and have him splice two eyes and go eye to eye with two steel clevesis, instead of using that other warp rope that you had shown, the beeline is extremely durable and for what you are going to use it for pretty cheap cause its only 1.75 per foot if im not mistakin on the sherrill website located on the links page of this website, check it out and im sure the more weathered treebuzz veterans know the name of the man who splices ropes

yeah, tell your boss HE can buy you a new saddle or take time and money to fix it, if it doesn't work for him. I personally feel companies that employ climbers should be paying for all their climbing gear, or at least give them a certain amount to buy the equipment.

Get some blue water titanium cordage, use it and ditch the webbing/buckles. You will get much faster rotation as well, since the diameter of the cordage is much smaller. Double up on it. I have a good friend who has used that for some time now, loves it.

Could not help but notice the location of those buckles. Seems like you are not getting any rotation to the right. Lower those things down closer to the attatchment points and utilize that bridge.

Good luck

Familytree, I've been known to splice for people on occasion. :)

SRT, I could make you up some beeline slings if you'd like. Let me know. But wouldn't you have to ditch the black aluminum connection point on the bridge? I think there are slots on there that will fit webbing, but not rope.

I tend to 'double back' all of my friction based connectors in the same manner that rock climbers use on their harnesses. If those friction bucles were doubled back they would be bomb proof.....and the liability still on the manufacturer.

Norm's point brings an example to mind. A rope manufacturer in Ontario is making a double braid competitor to the other 11mil ropes. Differece is most of the cover strands are technora....weird...but not the issue. Upon request the manufacturer had not tested the rope and could only guess what specs it might carry....that was odd.

But after talking with some very astute associates, I realized that the manufacturer carries all of the liability. They market the rope as a climbing line for arborists, if it fails to perform safely no company or employee will be held accountable, the manufacturer will.

^ unfortunatly, WCB (WorkSafe BC) does not see it that way. They hold the Employer 100% liable for equipment failures. So i can understand why the boss is real hesitant to let me use this saddle, when he feels uncomfortable about the webbing.

Again, If he doesn't like it, let him/her buy you a new one. Surely that would ease his discomfort of sitting on that big wad of money you make him(hopefully).
