Bandit 90 anvil questions

Can I flip it and get a fresh edge out of it.

I removed it an it has been rotated once.

It still has two fresh edges. Currently used edge is a bit rounded.

The hardware and mounting holes looks fine and universal for any of the 4 edges to be used.

How close do I want the blades to pass by the new edge? Someone told me a matchbook thickness? Seems close.

Thanks

If I remember correctly you can get 4 edges out of it if it hasn't been rounded over too much.

I don't remember the exact measurement. Call Bandit and they will give you the measurement. You can buy a feeler gauge from them for a few bucks.

I use a hacksaw blade for a feeler gauge placed in between the anvil and knives.

Looks about right.

Dealer (some guy working at a dealer) says, depends how big you want your chips. Really? I got him to tell me 1/8" works too.

I met a person on a job who knew everything about my chipper and the wisconsin engine on it. Gave me all these tips. He said a match book cover for the anvil. To me that sounds too close. What if the main axle/bearing assemblies wears a tad and allows the drum assembly to walk. A blade would no doubt make contact. I wonder if that happens and people just think the bolts were not torqued properly and came loose?

I get the best performance when I set the anvil as close to the knife as possible without hitting it.

Been running chippers for over 20 years and never had a problem with parts "walking".

How about tools walking Jim?

My kids take my tools and never put them back.... BTW, nice avatar photo!

Man, I haven't adjusted my anvil, yet. I've had the chipper for 2.5 years, but I've got less than 200 hours on it.

Does anyone know how many hours should be a good rule to change/or replace the anvil?

We had a Bandit Rep come to our office and show us the major maintenance items. Changing the knives and the anvil are number one in maintenance. It keeps the engine from struggling from doing its work.

The way I was taught was to set the knives close enough to the anvil that you hear a small clicking noise of the knives and the anvil touching. Then back them off a half to a full turn on the anvil bolts depending on the size of the chips you want.

Its really hard to explain. If you don't get it PM me and I'll give you a cal and explain it better.

I dont remember the decimals but used the correct feeler guage once and it was well under matchbook thickness. Now I just make it touch then back off a hare. I've redressed my edges with a grinder as they wear.
