bailey's = Walmart

bailey\'s = Walmart

Today I was pulling 2"-4" Diam.juniper stumps w/ a Ford Ranger. I was using Bailey's Korean choker cable 12' long.

The cable parted midline. Thank g-- everyone was well away wearing safety gear cause the ferrule zinged out and away into the brush.

I then pulled out another one and the same thing happened.
We calculated 1,000 lb. pulling on the cables.
Just a warning to you all RE: korean cable, Korean metal products. this includes clevis!
I am going to return the other cables I have to Baileys along with my concerns.
On another note seems like Baileys has cut a lot of corners with quality - may be due to the decline in the logging industry and wanting to sell sell sell, who knows?

This is a good one for Mr.Beranek to reply on.They have been asking his opinion for years on products. I will leave it at that.If he decides to reply, you'll get your answer.

Oh thank you Greg. I'll drop this info into Bills inbox.
Snarf, you're a good man for using cable to jerk stumps out. Lot of people have been seriouly injured and even killed doing the same with rope. I suspect the choker you broke is 1/2" dia. Which SWL is near 5,000 pounds. At 5:1 it doesn't figure that it broke so easily, but jerking can bear much more than the apparent load. Seen lots of steel cable break in the woods. Even new stuff. Up to 1 1/2" inch bull line, but ususally not without a bad bite in the line first. Generally when the cable breaks it strands out, and the energy release is gradule and so the cable seldom recoils very far. Least on worn cable. On the other hand, when the hook, bell or nubbin fails the energy release is very quick and the cable will snap/recoil with potential deadly repercusions. As far as I'm concerened you used the right tool for the job. Though in the future consider using heavier cable for jerking out those stumps. It's brutle, even for steel cable.
