I'll bite, what's with all the shock loading, you even had a GRCS in play?

What and when? ya it wasn't perfect. It would have been if I would have been on the ground but that's me up in the tree. Shock loading was minimal.

I thought the chainsaw overhead while spurring up the tree as probabley the most cowboy thing I have ever seen you do.

kinda like King Kong when he leapt and grabbed the plane from the air off of the Empire State Building.

Interesting move.
Cheers

I mostly think that tree work is a hedge your bets kind of deal. Which you seem to avoid doing....the lack of face cut will come back to bite you in the arse one day, trust me.

Oh...and nice clean up.

You git er done though!

not sure what the first part means.

Banjo...
you got that exactly wrong... there was no excessive shock loading.. it might have been better to double crotch some of that, but all loads were well within acceptable WL... So why do you spout such nonsense? Truth is he didn't need the winch on any of that... If you were going to criticize anything, he should have used the bollard, instead of the winch... not good to drop wood onto the winch.. I AM guessing he didn't have the bollard with him.

those rip cuts at :30, 1:30, 2:10, 4:18 were not indiscriminate. They were well used, cleaner, faster, easier and reduce shock loads. Ricky knows when to use them and when not to!

If you were talking about the cut at 6:08, I agree.. One handing in plane with his body while using the hand to push a vertical wood and NOT using a face.. Very bad technique... The danger there is that the piece could rock back onto the bar, garb the chain and throw the saw back towards the body...

Something to work on rick.. you make some very good cuts.. why not make a deep face and back cut til you can set the saw and push with both hands.. I like to save a few seconds too, wherever possible and SAFE... this move just isn't worth the time saved..

Nice Job Ricky, classic video! The last song was great. I love the use of the rip cuts, they seem to respond well to Ash wood. It's nice to rig down large branches when you can... it seems having 3 guys on the ground to move things along was another key factor to getting it done, especially with those backyard cleanups. Nice tractor!

I wonder if keeping that larger lead you used to double crotch starting at 1:35 (it looks like you removed that piece by 2:30) would have helped to swing a lot of that back side out to the yard side? Tough to tell with the ground video... no helmet cam this time Ricky.

The shock loading, didn't seem dangerous to me. I always want to be on the ground lowering my own wood too! I worked with a guy who self lowered almost everything, I guess it was because he trusted himself to do it.

Nice bottom cut while dropping the trunk. I like to get in the habit of being on the safest side of the fall when finishing the cut. The camera angle probably makes it seem more severe than it was in person, just something I thought I would mention. We've all seen wood to freaky things when it hits other wood.

Stay safe tree brother.

Nice job on that one Ricky..
I AM sure the homeowner appreciated the care you took to protect the lawn.. nice flat floaters.. 2:50, 2:58 and 3:18.. also liked the narrow notches for early separation, to reduce force. It took a second to figure out the tip tie at :40 was used to protect the GRCS.. Love the rip cuts, worry about you with all the unneeded one handing.. Only other thought was the cut at 5:45... lots of lift with the winch.. seemed like there was plenty of room to let gravity do its thing.. always easier that way..

Thanks Bixler! your absolutely right on the large lead. I realized this after but would have to of capture rope for retrieval. Bottom cut I felt safe and had area to move.

Thanks for the kind words Daniel. Some of the cuts were unorthodox but I am set in my ways and felt comfortable with everyone. Still learning and will keep on.

hey Daniel, Winch was used to pull tension and remove slack. Some was close to neighbouring trees. I use it all the time to lower wood and had any problems.

If you want to improve your game let that cut go... you may get away with it for an entire career OR NOT!.. only takes one mishap and game over!... so low probability with high stakes.. just not worth it when there are other options that are just as good or better, don't take more than a few extra seconds etc..

I was one handing in front of my body before and had the chain catch and the saw kick back towards me.. Its a helpless feeling.. strong or not, there is no controlling a kickback with one hand..

(the above statement was not made by a boyscout! LOL)

I wonder if they will make a saw that will activate chain break during kickback even when using one handed.
