Backup fall protection

I'm a fairly new tree climber, I've climbed 12 trees so far and it's definitely a addictive hobby. I was curious if the Petzl Rescucender would be a good backup for my GriGri2 or should i stick with the Camp Lift that i'm currently using on 11mm Sterling HTP rope, I climb solely SRT and might do some Ddrt in the distant future. I only climb for recreation and tree camping. Thanks for any help!

Welcome!

Are you climbing RADS (aka "Yoyo")? The top device used above the Grigri for the foot loop is typically a hand ascender, though I guess other rope grabs could work too. Or, do you mean something different by backup?

One classic backup is knots in the rope below you, to limit any uncontrolled descent. The other is to stay low and go slow as you build confidence in your system. ;)

Here's a good description of RADS with some good tips, just in case you haven't seen it:

One thing that Tim points out in that article is that some climbers run a sling from their harness to the ascender to use as a safety, others don't. I started that way using the ascender as a backup, but ditched it pretty quick - it just didn't make sense.

Hanging out at height, I'll add redundancy with a lanyard or maybe a backup knot. On descent, I want firm control of the brake strand, and manipulating other devices gets in the way.

Other authors recommend leaving the ascender on for descent, and going a few feet at a time but I hated that even more.

Very few, if any, professionals on here climb with a Grigri. But regardless of what attachment system they use, the overwhelming trend is to know and trust that system without backup devices on the same rope. Ascenders as climbing aids, not life safety devices.

Yes i'm using a left hand ascender with foot loops attached to it, And a micro pulley. I was looking for a backup rope grab or friction hitch to backup my grigri2 on long ascents as a fail safe pretty much. The problem i'm having is im not comfortable with how much the Camp lift ascender i'm currently using pinches the rope. It seems like its putting a lot of un needed force on the rope when it pinches it! I agree with you on the descent part and i typically remove the ascender and use only my Grigri2, But on Ascents the grigri2 pushes up the camp lift ascender and i never even know its there!

I wouldn't worry about the pinching force of the Lift, it's certified for that sized rope, and any cammed ascender is going to need to hold the rope firmly to avoid slipping.

Pushing up the backup device with the Grigri might not be the best idea - foreign objects obstructing the cam is one of its failure modes which can cause it to not engage.

I could tie a small piece of bungee cord to my hand ascender and attach it to the camp lift, to keep it out of the way of the grigri2. What do ya think?
