Avant A37500 Screw cone log splitter

Been here a while
Anybody used one or been around one in use? I’m curious how well they work. Wondering if it might be useful for busting up big rounds for firewood to make them easier to process on a regular splitter. Also wondering about using it for splitting less desirable species so we could send them through the chipper.

I use an Atom Splitter with my auger drive. They work great! You are better off splitting logs instead of rounds. They don't like end grain.

I have an auger, and have been contemplating this for firewood. Either that or buying a blown up log splitter and welding it to a blank mini plate. I have little desire to split logs for chipping or handling.
With your experience which would you go with?

For firewood I will use the Atom Splitter to split the 12’ logs into quarters or eighth depending on how big the log is, pick up the long splits with the BMG and saw those to firewood length, and if need be split those chunks with the splitter. I would go with the Atom Splitter type splitter over a hydraulic splitter as the AS is more versatile especially if you already have an auger drive. I have split up whole trees and chipped them like August’s video but much longer chunks. If it fits it chips. On real tough to split logs sometimes you have to chase the split with a sledge and wedges, a small axe, and saw is handy for severing stubborn fibers.

We use the eterra splitting cone on our mini ex. Its holding up so far. We broke the hex out of the atom splitter. The eterra one works better as the taper is straight. The atom splitter would get hung or stop pulling in at the bell out part. We have broken down stuff up to 6 ft in diameter with it. It lets us save from dumping the big ugly stuff and having to pay a lot for it. A lot of that big ugly stuff contains lots of firewood.

It'll also process down stumps. Can be very handy for dealing with uprooted trees. Most of the time we cant lift the football whole but in quarters its no problem. When you bust them most of the dirt falls off. Also makes it where we dont have piles of stumps in our wood lot.

I have a "black splitter" for my mini skid. It is overbuilt/very well built from Germany. The rep said that the side to side pressure will destroy bearings on an auger style attachment very quickly. I will say that it is a sweet tool, but having it on something like a wheel loader or mini skid isn't the ideal application. longer logs you will need to reposition several times "walking down the log" to split them, unless they are very straight grained. Meaning lots of backing up/turning/repositioning etc. Plus, if it is stringy, even after it is "split" there are lots of fibers connected, and you need to do some "bashing around" so to speak to actually get the pieces apart. If you are using the cone of the splitter to do the bashing (you absolutely will) you want something heavy duty that can take the beating.... I think it would be way more useful on a mini excavator, which I do not own, because you wouldn't need to be tracking all over the place to move the cone around.
I use it to split my own firewood, which I love it for. I use my one mini skid to lay out a bunch of logs, then I pop them with the splitter, then I jump on the other mini and use the grapple to take them apart and pile them for later cutting/splitting. Usually I split logs/stack/let sit for a year, then I cut and split them and put them under cover for a year with great results. Only takes a day or two to dinking around by myself to get 10 or 15 cords split up by myself log length.
That said, if you are buying it in hopes to chip all big logs etc you will be kind of frustrated. It will do it, but its time consuming. I was keeping it on a truck so I could use it to split up one or two big logs on site to avoid having to truck them, but it's almost not even worth it for me.... Easier to throw them in a truck and just dump them/deal with them later. If you don't have any space to bring logs it would be a method to break pieces down and chip them but it will be miserable....

Since I got the AS and IBC totes I have eliminated third and fourth hand handling of the wood. REAL time saving and more profitable if selling firewood.
I have 30 of the IBC totes for personal use. Only touch the wood once until you put it in the stove. I had the door to my basement widened so I can drive them right in with my mini and I keep a pallet jack in the basement. Always smiling when Im moving them lol

Ever get to use this auger, Ryan?

No. I talked to a tree service owner who is a friend of mine in Portland and he has one that I can borrow. Just haven’t had the desire to do so yet. Instead of splitting wood and chipping it on jobs I just brought it home and put it in a big pile and burned it. The pile was a little bigger than the size of a chip truck and it burned for around 4 days. Certainly needed some tending to keep going but cheaper and easier than other methods of wood disposal. I think what I am going to do with the big ugly chunks of wood this year is just stand them up on end every 8 feet or so down my entire property line and stack firewood in between them.
