Attitude

Location

We showed up to take away wood from a tree the local utility had removed. They were working on removing a tree on the other side of the road and had the whole road blocked off.

My problem wasn't that the Forman wouldn’t let us on his job site (I fully understand the safety reasons for this). It was his attitude about it. I was less then 30min until they packed up so we decided to wait. In that time I noticed that roofers were working on the roof of the house under the tree they were currently working on.

Then I watched the guy in the bucket one handing a back handle 200. Cutting the branch less then 2 ft from where his hand was holding it.

Which makes me think he was less concerned about saftey then he led on?

It's a rough call when paid contractors are at a job site. People like yourself that can be ordered away...should be!

I wasn't disagreeing with his decision, however my concern was his attitude about it. That and the roofers that were way closer to the danger zone then us. But like I said I was ok to wait the 30 min for them to finish off their day. I negelected to mention we didn't just drive onto the jobsite, we parked off to the side, and approched the forman.

I just think he didn't need to take the attitude he di is all.

Jim - It was a local mill who got us to pick up the wood.

easyphloem - haha

BostonBull - We would have except we were using a hiab to load it and power lines were in the way. I supose we could have dragged it under the lines, then picked it up, but their quitting time was 30 min away.

that's an excellent diagram.

you indicated the pile of wood was directly beneath the powerline, which is probably why they didn't want you there.

acting like an a$$hole is nothing unusual... all branches of the military practice an "always polite, never friendly" demeanor... Police, Fire crews, linemen, and many others seem to take the same approach.

Who knows? this story has nothing to do with idnwid's situation, but.... I remember when I was doing line clearance, we had to trim some trees back to 10' clearance for a residential tree crew, and the tree contractor guys sat there criticising our every move and whining about how stupid the laws were. Just another couple tree-gods, denied the opportunity to flex their skills in the spotlight of the adoring masses, whining and complaining like three year olds....
Finally, the foreman went over and told them, nicely, that if they didn't can the chatter, we would remove the whole tree and they'd be out of the job. I think they sulked off to the nearest starbucks to impress the barista with their Arboreal tales of derring-do and to seek an audience for their maltreatment. We left the brush for them to deal with, too.

I have alot of respect for line crews in most cases. Most of the ones in our area do good work.
I even find myself defending them to customers, who just see a "butchered tree". I show them how the've made proper cuts and explain that they have clearance guidlines that the have to meet. (In essence they do the best they can with what they are dealt)

Also after thinking about it, the crew in my story, may have had similar experiences as speelyei. Not that it makes the attitude right, but at least more understandable.
