Thanks guys, I love the color variations in Black Jack; it’s more interesting than your average Red Oak. I don’t usually find a straight section of trunk long enough to mill in this species of tree.

Blank Tuatahi China head (not made by them...) ready for grinding. It'll have a 20 degree chisel with wings ground out as a training axe. Not the perfect slice of ash but decent, took extra fiddling for perfect orientation which turned out mint.

I have a wood lathe and a mostly complete wood shop so I do woodworking of various kinds too. Here's a natural edge mostly bookmatch Sassafras fence I put up in the back corner of my yard. All the wood, posts, stringers and pickets were processed from trunk to finish by myself.

Man I love sassafras. Only have had a few experiences working with some small ones about 6-7” DBH

It's my favorite tree to smell, hands down.

Sassafras is a strange wood because it smells great when you’re working it, but a shot time later the wonderful smell disappears. I think the oils are “fragile” if I remember correctly.

Finally glued/clamped these two panel solid cedar doors. The two panels are 1” thick and the outer frame is 2” thick. I used a table saw to make it tongue and groove. I’ll post a picture after they’re installed.
