Armor prus

Hi
What method is best for splicing armor prus.(locked brummel?)
We have a role of 10 and 8mm.

Also what is a good cheap chord to rack up a few more practices on before we tackle the expensive stuff.

Intended application is e2e hitch cord for VT etc.
Been using knots on the 10mm and its very bulky, a splice would be much smoother.

For a VT, class 1 works and has tested as strong enough, but the stiffness of the bury can effect the performance.

Locked brummels are strongest, and perform better, but the naked eye needs to be coated as it picks easy & is vulnerable to damage.

Your right Nick.
I got a reply from donaghys

"Armor-Prus is a class 2 braid or core dependant. To utilise its full strength you should always use a class two type splice.

Please find attached eye splicing instructions for Superbraid and class 2 type braids."

These instructions are at

http://www.donaghys.com/splicing-instructions.html

The reason I asked the questions is I have seen other splices used and not the recomended one above.

I Just looked at Donaghy's instructions and saw that it retains the cover in the eye.

In doing the Naked Eye with coating are we able to use a locking brummel accounting for the longer bury as well?

I have done a few e2e splices with AP 8mm, I got one tested. I spliced a class 1 for one eye and class 2(correct splice for rope) for the other eye. The class one broke at 1610kg (so doubled for VT hitch use 3220kg) the class 2 didn't move at all. For my hitch I use VT with e2e 8mm AP class 1 eye splices

Naked eye locking brummels in armorprus have tested very strong.
The core is a very loose, soft spectra with 2 kevlar strands, it picks very easy and needs a good coating to hold up well.

I recommend folks that want to use this rope in such a manner to push the manufacturer to make directions for us to refer to. We CAN do it however we want. We tie our own knots- we're big kids now....

But the manufacturer should know how we're using the rope.

Manufacturer recommends class 2 double braid eye splice (core to core splice) On their website they have the instructions under 'super braids'

Got it- but we don't want Class II for hitch cords- right?

I'd love to see on their website, "when being used as a hitch cord configuration, armor prus can be spliced with core-only exposed eye"

...or however they want to word it.

I have tested both class 1 and 2 splices in 8mm at the Donaghys factory last year. I have not tested E2E naked eye splices as I do not bother splicing my friction hitch. I will talk to them tomorrow and should be able to do a break test on a locked brummel e2e.

Please excuse the derail.: Codz, that's one seriously disturbing avatar you got there, mate!

Sorry about the avatar, don't worry though, it is me creatively using some tree sap, I am still alive.
Further to the armor prus discussion, I spoke with the manufacturer today and will get the testing done next week. I will splice the naked e2e as a standard prussik and break test it. The previous tests for the class 1 splice broke at just over 2200 kg. The class 2 broke at a little over 2800kg. When I find the test results I will post the exact figures. Both class 1 and 2 were spliced with large eyes to suit the bollard and 1 meter between the extraction points.
I will also be testing a new version of the 8mm armor prus that has a polyester core. The polyester version has a rope strength of well above 22kn. This will eliminate the class 1 class 2 debate in several applications.
