are you fast or are you a craftsman?

Another thing to consider is smaller operations focusing on pruning, etc. versus big crews trying to do 2-3 removals in a day, etc.

I totally get it for you bigger guy's out there, production is everything. And at that point, I would imagine you get into a groove where you are still providing high quality while being fast and efficient.

But for some operations like myself doing mainly pruning with not many removals at the present time, I don't have a need to be that fast and do 3 jobs in a day, etc. I like to take my time, etc. And for me it's profitable.

Everyone is different.

Respectfully, in my opinion spending some extra time on the little details is not gonna hurt a company or make you lose money. It could be the thing that cause your customer to refer you to their friends etc. which makes you even more profitable.

If I do a job I’m not doing just the bare minimum, I like to go above and beyond, and I don’t think it’s wrong or hurts production.

That doesn’t mean “do hours of additional work for free” but paying attention to the little fine details isn’t a bad thing.

There’s a difference between doing work not outlined in the original quote for free, and just taking those extra few minutes to really put the icing on the cake with your work / cleanup because you’re passionate about what you’re doing and your work.

Likewise, paying attention to detail doesn’t have to mean you’re slow, you can be efficient with high quality but it also doesn’t need to be a competition here. Everyone operates at their own pace they’re comfortable with.
This is a solid post that I agree with. I always tell the guys to do the small stuff without nicle and diming the customer. That doesn't mean throwing in stuff that kills your production. Just a little show of appreciation that will pleasantly surprise them.

I also agree with Tom's post about doing what is quoted. Sales people need to be clear about expectations for the crew . We don't always have all of the info that they have, so decisions can be hard without it. This takes time to develop.
