Re: Arborist Frustrated with Equipment Dealers &Ju

I bought a bucket truck from Schmidy's Machinery 4 years ago. It was a decent price compared to the rest of the trucks I was finding on the internet, and at the time I could just pay cash for it. I drove to their place, and they had 12 Asplundh units on the lot. This was before they started painting all of them before they sell them. I was able to pick the truck that was obviously the best cared for, drove the best, smoothest bucket operation, etc. All I have done to that truck for the last 4 years is a clutch, (my guys fault after getting it stuck) and good routine maintenance. It passed Terex factory inspection last year and still has less than 100k miles on the truck. I agree that you don't want the "reconditioned" equipment, you want to see what it looks like when it comes in so you can make your decisions from that. I also think sometimes you just get lucky.

While I'm at it, I am wondering where I can find a good used lightweight grapple that will fit behind the cab of an "under CDL" chip truck of mine. It is actually an "over CDL" truck that was totaled and got a new cab put on the frame, that reads a gvwr of under 26K. I only have about 28 inches between the cab and the dump box. Is there such thing out there?

Re: Arborist Frustrated with Equipment Dealers &Ju

I also bought a bucket truck from Schmidy's 4 or 5 yrs ago. I went over to their lot the night before so I could really get a good look at the trucks. They had a lot of trucks that were scary, but also had some that you could tell were better taken care of. The next day I narrowed it down to two former Nelson Tree trucks. Five yrs later, the truck has been really good, no engine problems at all (knock on wood). I did have a line blow out and had to take the truck to a terex service dealer. While it was over there getting fixed, I had it certified, it passed with flying colors. The terex manager said the truck was in great shape. Since then I had it painted, and it looks like a million bucks. Good used equipment is hard to come by and luck plays a big part in that. You need to take your time when buying used equipment, know how it should perform. Also be very good about regular maintenance, if you take care of it, it hopefully will take care of you.

Re: Arborist Frustrated with Equipment Dealers &Ju

Maybe the start to a new thread but after buying used how long "should" something last before something goes wrong or breaks. Obviously, if you're driving it home and have problems you got hosed but what about a year or so down the road?
