Arboriculture Degree Programs in the US and Canada

southsoundtree

Been here much more than a while
Location
Olympia, WA
It occurred to me that having a list of programs in one thread would serve at least the purposes of

1) Potential students can more easily research and connect with these programs

and

2) Business owners/ Gov't workers/ NGOs would be better able to connect to interns and graduates.

Please list pertinent info like Name, Location, Web address, Degrees, Nature of the Program...

Mid State Technical college, Wisconsin Rapids WI, mstc.edu
Urban Forestry Technician

University WI Stevens Point, Stevens Point, WI, uwdp.edu
Multiple forestry programs including Urban Forestry

As far as pure Arboriculture programs that I'm aware of in Canada:

Sir Sandford Fleming College
Lindsay, Ontario
-Arboriculture certificate
-Urban Forestry certificate
-Urban Forestry Technician diploma
http://flemingcollege.ca/programs/arboriculture-co-op

Humber College
Oshawa, Ontario
-Urban Arboriculture certificate

Olds College
Olds, Alberta
-Arboriculture Technician certificate
http://oldscollege.ca/programs/horticulture/Arboriculture-Technician-Certificate/

There are talks of introducing an Urban Forestry/Arboriculture program at the Maritime College of Forest Technology within the next year. I'll be keeping an eye on that:

MCFT
Fredericton, New Brunswick
http://mcft.ca/en/explore/program

There are also dozens of certificates/diplomas/degrees available in horticulture, urban forestry, and forestry for those who want to work with trees, but may not be comfortable with the "work at height" aspect of arboriculture.

NC has Zero that I know of. NC State U tried to start a UF major but it fizzled. The one UF course had 3 classes on arb the first year; no more.

Canada -
As mentioned above, Industry Training Authority (ITA) runs the arborist program with the following levels:

Level 1: Arborist Technician
Level 2: Climbing Arborist
Level 3: Field Arborist

Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, BC and Camosun College in Victoria, BC both run these programs.

Arboriculture Canada (ArborCanada) offers a number of climbing, felling, aerial rescue and pruning programs as well.

Apprenticeships have been looked over so far through Ontario.
Humber offers a 2 year (1 semester per year in downtime) in Toronto, along with 5400 hours in the field, under a certified Journey person. Then you can challenge the Ontario MTCU 444a exam.
Lambton in Sarnia also offers the same term, but they usually struggle for numbers in comparison.

You gain a certificate of Apprenticeship for both terms in school, not to be confused with being ticketed in the field.

This is considered equivalent to the ISA certification.
Personally I think it's harder due to lack of opportunity, a harder test and arguably more time logged on paper.

I would not compare the two at all, one tests your knowledge once(multiple times if you require) an an other teaches you the basics of the industry and gives you the tools to keep learning throughout you career.

Following up with my original post. MCFT just officially launched their 2-year Utility Arborist program in conjunction with NB Power. Applications are currently being accepted (25 spots) with a start date of, I believe, February 2017.

Milwaukee area technical College in Mequon Wi, offers a two year Arboriculture program. Heavy emphasis on woody plant identification, with tons of practical, in tree climbing and rigging and removal practice. Matc is also the only college program I've heard of that offers a specific course in single rope technique.

Wisconsin also just launched what I believe is a first of its kind arborist apprenticeship program, with paid training offered through Matc.

In Massachusetts:

The Stockbridge School of Agriculture, connected to UMassAmherst, offers a two-year degree in Arboriculture and Community Forest Management:

Any online courses? I'm in Northern California, having a hard time finding anything in my area.

Check with Paul smiths in upstate ny. Last I heard they were looking at doing the first year online and the second on campus. I haven’t been up to talk with them in a couple years so I’m not sure how far they got with the program.
