yes, i need one.

i've wanted one from the second tree removal we did with it.

dead, very brittle red oak. a few small limbs fell on the cab. the international cab steel is very thin. we have two dents, i think both from that day. no dents since then, i think.

i drew up plans on how to make it. difficult to cover the whole cab and hood with the hood lifting forward, but possible.

haven't had the money to spend on the rack yet, other things have been more important.

yeah, truck isn't done yet, cab rack needed, heavy duty log container with removable chip top, dress up stuff for the wheels, strobe lights, spot lights, cameras, lots still NEEDED. that's what i'll tell my wife, we NEED IT. ha.

when landing a pick in the zone, am i correct in asuming that operating that knuckle without a fly jib means you have to telescope the boom in while booming down in order to maintain the same loaded radius?

"in order to maintain the same loaded radius"

with you using those words, then the answer is yes.

Example: Lets say I have the boom fully extended and vertical to take a pick.

Lets say it reads 80% (which i would not do), if I tried to just lower the load at the last knuckle (without telescoping in) then, yes, my alarm would go off and stop me from letting it down that way because it would be out of the safe capacity at some point before it gets to the landing zone.

i would need to telescope IN as I let it down.

But, I usually take Picks at 60% initial capacity or less.

Plus usually, the landing zone isn't far enough away where i wouldn't need to telescope in anyway.

I would think that even with a fly-jib, those operators would need to telescope in when setting down a pick that is near capacity as well. Allmark or Mike can advise here.

This is the process I am wondering about when it comes to speed of removing a tree with a crane vs. a k-boom. I imagine telescoping back in to put a load down is quicker then out. Is this correct?

Can you retract the K-boom at the same time you are moving from the pick to...let's say, the curb?

i'm often moving 2 or 3 functions at the same time. sometimes even four functions.

it's very fast.

I'm usually rotating, knuckle booming down and telescoping in at the same time.

that's what i figured, but im used to a stick myself, lookin to go bigger, still weighin the pros and cons. you bring up a very valid point though, even with a fly, you would have to be able to "boom up" quite a bit with at least one, if not both of the main knuckles in order to lower the fly without retracting. how do the wear pads fair on a k-boom with all that telescoping at extreme angles while loaded? from what i understand, most are sold with greasable sliding pads not rollers, much like stick booms.

no rollers.

On our Palfinger; just pads. and the sides have brass pads, or rub points that you can keep adjusting in as they wear.

To grease it, i just extend it all the way out and horizontal with the ground. Get out the grease bucket and rub grease on each section. It is best not to telescope in on that first inward movement after the greasing. But to lift up to full vertical, then telescope in, this will suck the grease in with each section better, instead of the lower portion scrapping off the grease. Then when you do use it horizontal, the grease stays in the sections better.

Of course, all the knuckles have greasable points.

I probably haven't had mine long enough to answer that question on how long they last.

oh, if you beg me i will. I just never have enough time to do the things i want to do. It's friday night, almost 12 midnight and I'm finally getting on the buzz. It's like my personal favorite real TV show.

I will post soon, thanks for the interest.

usually on the weekend, i get more time.

I just want to read right now. The Lorax has got my interest.

Since that trucks pretty multifunctional (you have both the crane and dump hydr.) does the truck auto-idle with the PTO on? From my limited experience with stick cranes I've seen that they do, and since you were saying you often utilize 2 or 3 controls at a time I would imagine yours would too? If so, does the dump hoist operate the same way?

Good question.

the radio remote has a switch to effect the idle in 3 ways.

1.switch off, the truck only idles and never revs up on it's own (i almost never use).
2. Swith on "Auto", as soon as I touch a toggle button, the engine revs up to power the hydraulics with the right amount of power. When I'm finished with a toggle, it goes back to idle. (this is what I use almost all the time).
3. the third setting, is increase idle, when in this position, the throttle is always rev'ed up. (never use)

The hooklift function (dumping, putting the bed on the ground) does not actually effect the throttle. This function must be used from idle to 1000 rpms, so it want's low rpms anyway. When using it, I'm in the cab anyway (although there is like a 10 foot remote cord to the joystick device). I usually run it at idle, unless dumping or powering down. In the roll off function, I power it with 1000 rpms during sliding on the frame, but let it go idle speed at the transition leaving the rollers.

Oh, and unlike stick cranes, the outriggers are used at idle too. they don't want the rpms up while using them.

How often do you use the K-boom for a T.I.P.? I would love to have the ultimate T.I.P. when trimming a tree.

With that said, can you turn off the truck and hold the K-boom in the same position for long periods of time? This would save fuel and reduce noise if someone were trimming with the K-boom.

And I understand a basket can but on one, I'm just curious if climbing with a K-boom is often used...

I never even tought of that... How amazing would that be, using a crane as a 'heavenly' TIP? Wow.
