anyone know about the "knut" friction hitch?

anyone know about the \"knut\" friction hitch?

Hello,
I'm looking for some information on the "knut". I first heard about it at Tree Stories in Montreal and I'm interested in hearing about how it's tied and it's characteristics. Its it similar to the distel?
Let me know if you have any information about it.
Thanks, Russell VanWijngaarden

Go to Arborist Site and do a search for Knut knot. There were at least two threads about it several months ago that had some good discussion. The title of the most recent thread was something like 'Hey TreeTx, here's the Knut'. That thread had a photo of the original Knut and a photo of a variation of the Knut.

knut hitch

i think this is the correct pic. not sure whose image this is, so feel free to pipe up if it's yours.

i've climbed on the knot a few times, and it works alright, easier to advance than a distel or swabisch for the most part... but like everything else, it pales in comparison to a properly set up VT with an advancing pulley.

When that pic was posted; a few posts later i beleive it was said that the wraps should continue in the same direction, instead of stopping and reversing.

If you tie a 1 over 4 clove/tautline/distel, and keep the top single ring loose enough; you can shuffle the top ring down over the 4 (actually i favour 3) and set below the 4 turns (the 4 would be a french prussik?), so that the single halfhitch ring seats below the 4 turns, then set. The half hitch becomes a pusher ring/knot tender, to serve the 4 grabbing rings up. Very innovative.

i play with making the same half hitch pushing ring under braids on VT, with some success.

Here is the pic, that followed the previous one, and was claimed as the original /right as far as i know.
