Anyone done a Grapple/Chipper Truck Combo?

Thinking out loud here and looking for some feedback. I will be selling our '92 International chip truck soon and was wondering about a Grapple / Chip truck Combo with a dump bed and a removable or slide roof with a slot in the rear doors for the chips to come through when necessary. I don't know where the grapple arm will ride yet but starting to configure things. Any thoughts out there? Thank you in advance.

When I had a grapple truck, with an open back, we'd chip into it occasionally. Tip the bed up to deflect the chips a bit. Some would slide off which wasn't bad to rake up. Spraying over the sides is more of an issue.

Rood lids that hinged down on the sides would be simple to fabricate. Another option is to have tarps made from the material that roll-off dumpsters use for covering their tops. Rope tie downs with simple jam cleats or t-bollards on the side would keep the tarp in place while chipping.

My friends knuckleboom crane has walls and a lid, so it's basically what you're talking about, except with a bigger boom. We haven't chipped into it yet, but 30 yards of space are there if we needed it.

I'll see about getting a picture one day.

We are looking to get into a grapple truck next year. I spoke to timberline trucks.....they seem to put together a pretty nice package. It would double as our chip and log truck. The roof just comes off via grapple when need be. Maybe someone could chime in who is running one?

we run a knuckle crane chip box combo. the truck has removable lids about 15/18yds of chip space, very versitile...We like the truck but we are thimnking of going a bit bigger,\
Xman has a truck w a big kboom and a rollof combo that you can chip into. i have seen it work. its a very sweet set up!

Makes sense. Guess it really comes down to budget. When I had looked Ito it this summer it seemed a single axle reconditioned truck with a grapple and a box would be in the $75k plus range.

Wow Y'all! Thank you for the feedback. As always, tree buzzers come through with a viewpoint I had not expected. I am very encouraged by the amount of information and connections that are out there.

check out timberland trucks. Jack builds a pretty sweet truck. Ours has a copma 140.5 kboom which has about 60 ft of height and a 30 yard chip body with a removable roof.

Ive been checking these out too. I think this is my next move.

I believe you live pretty close to me so if you ever want to check mine out in person you are more than welcome to.

not to hi-jack this, but has anyone done one of the palfinger epsilon or log lift z style loaders on a chip truck, and how do you like it. We will be replacing a chip truck I imagine in the next few years and was thinking about this as well. It would be awesome for us to get one with a debris style grapple, as we would like to use it to help with stump grinding clean up / restoration. Also correct me if I'm wrong but arent the z style loaders better suited for the log loader / grapple type work compared to the smaller k-booms? I have heard the smaller k-booms are not meant to go through the more continuous loading cycles you would use the grapple for.
