Antique chainsaws

30+ years ago, I knew a fellow with 2 very large Wright Reciporcating Saws. Yellow housings.
They were quite old even then.
Don't know what the advantage(s) of reciprocation was supposted to be.

I use to have a Wright saw. The saw blade was actually linked directly to the top of the piston. Talk about direct drive! If there were any advantages to them, they'd still be making them. I'm just glad I don't have to go out in the woods with any of those old machines!

Nearly 50 years ago (it sounds impossible) my father owned a Homelite, w/ a blue housing.
Great saw. It started every time for years. I’m guessing that it had an 18 - 20” bar.
We dropped a lot of trees.

The last tree I remember was a ~30+” Maple, that was within a couple feet of a roadway.
(It was a yellow brick road .... REALLY !)

Dad said it was my task for the next day. He left it to me.
It is my proudest drop.

I don’t think they make HomeLites like they used to.
Now I’m a Stihl fan.

That was the first saw I ran, too. Blue Homelite, bare metal handle and no vibration dampening. Great cutting saw...

My Dad recently gave me his Homelite C-72. 80 some cc's and it was bought new for him by my Mom's parents in the mid 60's. He went out of town to Vermont for emoyment with it in the 70's and kept it around for all these years. A Super XL took the spot light in the late 70's but I remember the C72 making an appearance every couple of years throught my childhood. I have yet to put a bar and chain on it and make a cut myself but it is still operational. By this point its a family heirloom so I may just keep it on a shelf and share it with my little boy when the time comes.

My first saw was a Super2. I have one still and helped my 6 year old boy cut his first logs last weekend, some 3" sassafras. I wouldn't let my hand off it out of safety but my boy has both hands on it and ran the throttle like a pro. His grin afterwards was priceless. Homelite's may have went down the toilet but the history of their heyday will be passed on to my boy and he will have the chance one day to show off my little collection to unsuspecting throw away saw owners.

Anyone know what Homelite this is? Sort of has a blue housing. Not sure the model #.

Occasionally these old guys feel obliged to bring out their saws and share them. I think its a way for them to revisit a more vital phase in their own life. I've got a good photo of an old Mall saw with its operator that I'll share.

This photo here is of a guy who acquired this homelite in the mid 60's. When he got back from Vietnam he worked for a few years harvesting western red cedar stumps and selling them for shingle stock to the mills. Total gyppo saw. He had a lot of feeling for that saw, held it like it was his lady or a favorite shotgun at the least...
