Ok, I’ll bite. What was the point of the plunge cut thru the center of the hinge before beginning the back cut?
The 2 reasons I know of are cut a fat tree with a short bar, and gut the hinge to lessen the risk of barber chair

I’ll add that I never really gut the hinge other than short bar issues. Or for small diameter trees when I know I need to pound wedges, I’ll gut a slot so the wedge doesn’t drive against the hinge.

The main reason I typically see this used is to limit fiber pull on high quality veneer logs.

For spars I’ll just gut the center of the hinge by over pivoting the nose of the bar in the back cut leaving two fat triangles which get narrowed after everything is set.
