Another stem wobble vid

That's what you get when you leave so much hinge!

Cool shot! Did you have a snipe in your underbed? No?

The sway had little to do with the hinge Butch, just the spindliness of the tree. I had about 100' below me. Watch how far the top pushes the stem back before it goes.

What do you mean by sniping the underbed? Cutting off the corners? Boring the backcut?

A snipe is the angled bottom cut of the notch.
If it's large enough the tree generally pushes back less and decreases the bending moment as the top goes over.
The sway is also increased by a larger amount of holding wood in the hinge.
I think that's what MB is referring to.

Great video,

they only have foliage on the top like that and bugger all on the way up by the looks ... must have had a fair whack of room below you.

How many chunks etc for what remained?

Not sure how many chunks for the rest eric...I think maybe 5 12' logs and then a little spar. Lots of room to drop stuff, the tree only took about 20min.

I hear what you were saying about cutting a piece out of the undercut to lessen the force as the hinge closes...wouldn't have really made a difference in this case tho. Watch this second short vid and notice the sway in the stem just as i'm moving around a little.

Gord, looks like the butt came back a little.
Doesn't look like any stump shot but I'm just going by the picture.

If you download the clip and rename as an avi it should work roger, I changed the extension as the site won't accept a .avi attachment.

It was a nice ride!
