Another SRT thread

After watching Jay work the masters tree in Ohio using the rope wrench, I can see the advantages of working a big spreading using SRT. What I'm wondering about are the smaller and medium tree? Also what if don't hit the highest crotch with my throw line how hard is it to advance you line higher in the tree from in the tree? Hopefully my rope wrench will be here tomorrow and I'll be able to start playing around with it by the end of the week.

In tree advancing isn't that hard. HAving an eye or Ness Loop on the end makes it easy to attach a small throwbag to the rope. Then use the extra weight to lob it up higher. Or, double lanyard advancing works too.

Another SRT convert! I love it!

Countryboypa is showing using a sheet bend as a life support knot. I dont think I would agree with that as a way to join 2 ropes for life support application, even with the backups.

A simpler method would involve using a sling with a pear shape carabiner on one end and a "D" and micro pulley on the opposite end, installed at the next branch and simply clipping the static rope in. It can be moved easily multiple times, and is retrievable from the ground.

Yeah i changed how i do that. The sheet bend is backed up with a Yosemite tie off and a half hitch. Never had a problem with it. Now i use an midline knot like and alpine butterfly and just use a biner to attach my climbing line.

The only time i really use this method is for tree's over 100' and in competition for the masters tree. Its quick if your close to your tie in point.

I really should just delete that video and make a new one.

I use about 3 different methods to advance my TIP to its final desired location. Most often at work i'll set my line and carry the tail up with me, then use a throw weight on the tail of my line to advance to my desired tie in point. Not to hard.

Another simple method would be alternating lanyard.

Find what works for you. I almost never aim or hit my desired TIP but i don't really find that i'm wasting much time in advancing.

I'll see if in the relative near future i can put together a couple different video's covering this topic as well as different ways of tying in. It really opens up possibilities.

Here is a picture of how i was tying in while crown cleaning some 130'+ tulip poplars.

Advancing rope is basicically the same as ddrt. Its interesting playing around with the length of your line. A short line is nice and easy to move around with you, but a long line is great if your going long distances through the canopy. its easy to burn 200 ft. having a system which your ground person can give you more rope is convenient. I use my ground person a lot for srt climbing.

Hey Jordan,

Not a helmet cam. I took my gorilla tripod and wrapped it around a chest box. I tried it on my helmet but without the fish eye lens you couldn't see anything!
