Another double braid question

Sorry again for the newbieness...

Is it possible to make a double-eyed spliced rope that is shorter than the 5 fid lengths?
How would this be done?

Yes, it can be done and it's not that hard. Splice the first eye, then instead of tying the knot on the other end, use the splice as the knot.

I sometimes tie a very tight whipping to lock the cover and core.

When doing the final bury, release the whipping so that you're actually balancing BOTH eyes as the same time.
