American Chestnut Removal

Been here a while
Removed an American Chestnut in Portland Oregon today. Probably 120 years old, completely solid, and might get sawed up into firewood. Nobody up here seems to be doing anything with hardwood logs. Just finished a job a week ago where we took down 41 birch trees with large logs on all of them. Every single one was cut into firewood. Anybody know of someone who would want to salvage good hardwood logs in the northwest?

Ryan, You might want to did deeper, there should be a source in your area. Here in Wa, sort yards buy alder, maple, and birch hardwoods. And there are specialty buyers for unique hardwoods if you really look around. If those birch logs were 16 inches at 20 feet, you should have made $120 for just one!!!

As well, Urban Hardwoods here takes most all hardwoods off our hands. When Jim first started up, he never paid for wood. Now I've heard he will pay, though I have yet to request that he do so. If the log is valuable, from now on I will. We once gave him two full length log truck loads of DED killed elm, fromn which I know he was able to salvage a lot of valuable furniture wood.

Why on earth did they want a 120 year old American Chestnut cut down? I hope that you all saved as many chestnuts as possible. I know some people involved in trying to bring the chestnut back that would probably love to have some of them.

The tree had to come out because it was dying. That whole area of Portland used to be a huge chestnut orchard but now it is nothing but houses. This tree was the last one.
