AlturnaMat-wich

Hey winch I would just stack the mats together. It is a pretty good idea to add the tires. That never crossed my mind. Thanks. I have seen people use tires but it didn't occur to me to make the mat-wich.

This may be too Neaderthalish for folks with log trucks, but if avoiding lawn damage is critical, what about cutting 20" sections one by one and letting them drop next to stump. Thereby no lawn damage, especially if you will be grinding the stump. I would bet the elapsed time of each technique (setting up alturna mats, felling a tall stem and using log truck, vs chunking it down and then loading the chunks) would be the same. Of course if getting lumber out of the tree is critical then chunking is not an option.

That was a perfect tree for a boom truck or riding seat crane either of which could have just picked that log. Much faster removal and nothing would hit the ground meaning no lawn damage what so ever. You could have hired one in for the minimum, 3 or 4 hrs. It would have added to your costs but also would have saved removal time, the time to set up the crash pad, lawn damage repair time, etc. Plus if the client is so addament about no lawn damage you could just figure it into the cost.

but if you bid for no lawn damage......

That is debatable. I have destroyed lawns and then spent a few minutes to dig and prep the lawn to make it look "almost" un-touched many times without any comnplaints. It all depends on so many details.
