All Purpose Climbing Boots

the only boots i have found worth investing in for everyday climbing are mountaineering boots and linemen boots. I use a pair of Columbia Titanium Mount. boots for most days and for long days of climbing or spur removals i use 10 inch Hoffman Duraline. I also had great luck with a pair of Scarpa Mount. boots from Sierra Trading Post.

I found 3 models of Asolo, All sorts of hiking boots, cheap boots, hunting boots have all gone to crap after a few short months. Especially in winter with the added terrors of salt and snow and freezing temps.

Best advice to give to anyone looking for long term boots, Get a sturdy Vibram sole and spend the money on them. Dont be cheap unless you want to go buy another pair of $80 cheap boots from Cabelas every 3 months when you can spend 250 on Hoffmans and last 2.5 years a still going very strong.

I've been really impressed with these boots made by Scarpa. Excellent for spurs, fine for spurless and groundwork, medium weight, good water resistance. They've lasted really well.

I've went thru lots of boots, some La Sportiva Trangos (great boots that don't hold up long enough for the dough), Asolo Fugitives (excellent for spurless and groundwork, so so in spurs), Scarpa Charmoz (poor imitation of Trangos), La Sportiva Makalus (not suited for tree work in my opinion, rubber rand started peeling right away), bunch of regular works boots, all garbage except for some Red Wings that held up alright.

gord what type of spurs do you use with those? how are they to footlock with? and it rains alot up there so how are they in a wet/icy tree and do you limb walk much? i'm seriously thinking of giving these a try. i use geckos and footlock anything under 60' n mar bar the rest. i'm wondering if the heal is deep enough for geckos.

I've worn buckingham and geckos with the Scarpas and them work well with both. I would say they're more of a spur boot than a pruning boot, but I like them all around.

I did it. I drove 2.5 hours north, to a civil war era barn that houses a family run business responsible for patenting the first ski boot ever in the USA. They now make the finest hiking boots in the world, smae way since the 50's. They make custom handmade boots there as well, 18 month wait. They have four styles to choose and one color for each style, unless you wait the 18 months. Ill keep you updated on how they work out. Best experience i have ever had buying stock boots. Fitting took roughly 2 hours, and Ken was more than happy to do it, to make sure I had the perfect fit. Made me wear each size for half an hour, and wouldnt let me comment on how they felt for the first 20 mins. Very hands on, and extremely knowledgeable.

ONE piece of leather makes the whole entire boot, chrome tanned full grain leather. Naturally waterproof, no gimmicky non breathing Goretex or the like. Double stitched Norwegian soles. Notice the diagonal seam on the inside of the boot, stitched shut with 6 rows.

While I was there, a guy walked in, he was maybe 50 years old. He was picking up a pair of boots there for repair/resole. I asked how he liked the boots. He said I own 3 pairs. So naturally I inquired on how long he gets out of a pair. He tosses me the boots, and says ive gotten 25 years out of this pair, hopefully get the same out of the other 2!
