The Village of Algonquin, IL (Pop. 30,046) is seeking applicants for the position of Maintenance Worker I - Parks & Forestry for the Public Works Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position will function under the direction of the Parks & Forestry Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This is a non-supervisory position except for the occasional oversight of employees defined as seasonal or temporary.

High School Degree or equivalent; any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.

Some knowledge of equipment, materials, supplies, and procedures used in park and tree work; some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions; basic skill or proof of trainability in the operation of listed tools and equipment; ability to work independently and to complete daily activities; ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.

State of Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class “B”, with a tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of the date of hire; Illinois Department of Agriculture pesticide license, or ability to obtain one within six (6) months from the date of hire; ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Potential candidates must possess the physical strength and ability sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, sometimes under dirty and uncomfortable conditions and in all kinds of weather. Heavy labor is defined, for example, as handling fifty (50) pound bags of grass seed or lifting seventy (70) pound logs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to stand, walk, bend, lift, stoop, twist, kneel, sit, crouch, and crawl.

Performs the operation and routine maintenance of all departmental equipment including, but not limited to: pick-up trucks, dump trucks, snow plows, aerial lift units, skid steers, back hoes, front end loaders, agriculture tractors, snow blowers, sweepers, lawn mowers, turf edger’s, power brooms, string trimmers, chainsaws, stump grinders, wood chippers, power pole saws, generators, electric motors, pumps, grinders, floor scrubbers, hydro-seeders, aerators, sod cutters, winches, brooms, mops, shovels, and a variety of hand tools.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

All aspects of tree work including, but not limited to: trimming (from the ground, climbing, or aerial lift unit); removals; stump removals/grinding; stump restorations; storm damage clean up; inventory; planting; inspection; insect/disease treatment; watering; chipping; and staking/guying.

All aspects of turf maintenance including, but not limited to: restoration (dirt and seed); sodding; hydro- seeding; mowing; watering; aerating; string trimming; sidewalk/bike path edging; fertilizing; soil conditioning; and pest and weed control.

All aspects of park site maintenance including, but not limited to: trash collection; restroom cleaning; playground inspection, repair, and surface installation; painting; site improvements; wetland maintenance; baseball and soccer field maintenance; maintenance of tennis/basketball courts and nets; drinking fountain maintenance; maintaining/adjusting photo-cell/timer systems; sprinkler system repairs; fencing repairs; sweeping/washing/painting site amenities; and semi-skilled trade work (plumbing, electrical, roofing, and carpentry).

Provides planter bed maintenance at Village-owned properties. This work includes, but is not limited to: planting of all types of landscaping material, weeding, mulching, pesticide treatments, and edging.

Performs all aspects of work as related to seasonal projects including, but not limited to: ice rink maintenance, snow plowing, sidewalk shoveling, installation/removal of holiday decorations, and the planting of annual flower displays.

Performs work as related to special projects including, but not limited to: installation of fencing, playground components, playground edging, brick pavers, signs/posts, drinking fountains, and retaining walls. Also assists in construction projects at new or existing parks.

Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.

Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of Parks and Forestry maintenance functions.

Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate Federal, State, and Village safety, security, and operational standards, including, but not limited to: regulations that address confined space entry, equipment lock out and tag out, hazard communication, and the use of personal protective equipment.

Understands and complies with all Village policies, contractual agreements, and departmental directives.

Participates in a schedule as an on-call employee for the Parks and Forestry Division.

Must be detail oriented and maintain a personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service, promote a positive Village of Algonquin image, and to help foster an increasingly professional department. Maintains a consistently positive and self-motivated attitude.
