ALB in Boston?? What's up?

ALB in Boston?? What\'s up?

Do any of the Boston people know what's going on? I heard about e-mails going around that confirm ALB is in Boston. Info please!!!!!

Re: ALB in Boston?? What\'s up?

It's isolated to a small group of 6 red maple on the Faulkner Hospital grounds in Jamaica Plain. Trees are cut down and chipped as of this morning 7/6. A 1.5 mile "regulated" zone has been declared around the site. That area will be surveyed by USDA and state over the next few months. Everyone on the ground thinks it's totally isolated, Arnold Arboretum is across the street, they recently surveyed the entire arboretum for ALB and found nothing. I'm a little over a 1/4 mile from the site and none of the red or norway maple in my neighborhood have any signs of the beetles. My guess is they came in a nursery tree to the Faulkner grounds, feds and state are looking into the source of the beetles. Kudos to whoever found the beetles.

What Moss says s true. I was a stones throw from the faulkner Hospital working in four large Sugar Maples. None of them had any signs of anything. I hope it keeps contained to those six original trees.

The positive thing about the wide-spread outbreak in Worcester is that MANY people are aware of ALB. Most of these people are outside the industry. The public knowledge is what can help detect, identify, and isolate these insects.

Ted, these reports are gonna keep coming. It is sad but true. Hopefully we'll be as lucky spotting the upcoming (already existing) infestations out there.

We should get going on some RI awareness/training stuff. Maybe there already is but its time to get very serious. I'll call you tomorrow at lunch and we'll talk turkey.

Re: ALB in Boston?? What\'s up?

Yup its here, ruined my friggin vacation!

Moss hit the nail on the head. Isolated for now, we will still be under a quarantine for the next three years...

Tom/Ted, its a good idea for you guys to get plugged into this. We went to all the trainings in Worcester 'just in case' and I feel a lot more confident about how this is all going to go down now that I am somewhat familiar with the procedures. Call me and I'll let you know when the trainings are scheduled.

Re: ALB in Boston?? What\'s up?

NY is under a campfire wood move for a year now and let me tell you they mean it watched a DEC pull over camper and was asking about the wood in their trailer. 50 mile limit on wood movement.

Greg, John Campanini from RITree attended the trainings as well, and they (RITree) are currently active as far as outreach as far as their reach goes. I think that we could do more, though, so I'm not opposed to more of us getting involved. I have already offered to do 'drop everything' inspections if a call comes in, but thankfully none have.

There is a compliance training in Brookline on Tuesday morning.

As far as dropping everything...I keep having to remind people that my actual job was hard enough before this buggggg.

Re: ALB in Boston?? What\'s up?

The Unofficial Jamaica Plain Canopy Research Team is heading out this afternoon to do some treetop ALB surveying, we are entertaining all possible ALB introduction theories including conspiracy. Will report back later :-)

I saw a pick up load of firewood go speeding by me on the hiway on the Friday of the 4th. It was from mass headed to there camp. I wanted to smash into him with my car.

Kinda makes you think there should be state border checkpoints for people transporting firewood 'though we'd start to hear a lot of complaints about living in a police state.

Any firewood load from Mass. with ALB would have to be coming from the Worcester area restricted zone. Don't think they're going to find any more ALB in Boston from the current regulated zone, two weeks of intensive surveying by USDA and nothing found.

At the community meeting in Boston USDA mentioned several possible sources including nursery stock for the Boston ALB. If it is from a nursery they're going to have fun tracking destinations for all the maples out of that theoretical nursery over the last ten years. If it is a nursery surce there will be many other very local infestations in New England similar to the Boston scenario. Will be very interesting to hear the results of their study (still pending) to determine the Boston source.
