Advertising calls

We get quite a few. Mostly ads in magazines and such. Worth the money?

Had a guy call today telling me I was highly recommended and would like to feature our company in a publication that is mailed out to members of golf clubs in our area. Also saying only one tree service is going to be listed. Then after talking non stop he claims he has 30 companies on a list and I am the tenth one he called.

Is it just me or does the highly recommended go right out the window.

I respectably decline and he literally made pouting noises...his voice changes to a very soft tone saying "I don't know what to say" and hangs up.

I understand he is trying to sell me something but his reaction was like a little kid.

They called me last week. I asked 2 questions... who recommended me, and how much? Told him that he had to e-mail me a perspectus of what he was offering and I would get back to him favorably... but if he ever called me again it would NOT go over well. Never got the e-mail.

If you are going to advertise in a printed form, pick a local magazine that is marketed to people in the demographic that you try to sell to or have the most success with. We advertise with a local free magazine about sustainablity and the farm to table movement. Most of our clients are eco-conscious and we have had great success this way. Google ad words works really well too.

The main thing to remember is that they're cold-calling you. They are the advertising industry's version of our own beloved "schmuck in a truck" tree work providers who go door to door, trying to scare up work.

If you want to mount an effective advertising campaign designed to elicit results, look for a consultant with a portfolio of satisfied clients you can contact. You'll need to look them up though, because they won't be calling you.

Ignore them. Hang up as soon as you know its someone trying to sell you advertising. Spend your money on the web! Professional website + adwords = instant growth.

Being in Los Angeles and having high yelp ratings we get approx 2 calls per week from EVERYONE trying to sell advertising. I always tell them the same thing:

"There is no way for you or me to know if my investment in your company will be good for me. Give me three months free. If it works, I'll pay you back for the 3 months and sign on for a year contract. If you can't do that, thank you for your time but I'm not interested."

ArborMan is right. Just hang up. Go home and improve your website.
