Adopting new equipment

I recently had a disagreement with my employer about using a new piece of gear that I purchased.

Here's the situation. We do a lot of pruning on high-end properties with valuable landscapes which must be protected. To assist with limb removals on these jobs, I brought in a Rig N Wrench (brand new) to be used for LIGHT tip-tie rigging where maximum control is needed.

My employer was adamant that this gear was unacceptable and NOT to be used, because it did not have official testing and documentation.

This reaction struck me as closed-minded and overly cautious, particularly regarding a tool that was a) not life-safety PPE, b) cost $0 to the company and c) widely used by progressive arborists around the country.

So I'm curious... what are the policies about new equipment at your companies?

Ps. This isn't really about the Rig N Wrench. It could be any new, innovative tool.

What official testing and documentation would satisfy your employer?

The only credentials for equipment that I'm aware of are for load breakage.

In the ancient days before Internet communication innovation and adaptation was done in isolation. We would find something and test i on our own. Then when there was a gathering of arbos the ideas were shared. Very little documentation since film cameras were clunky.

This wasn;t that long ago in time either.

The mantra of low and slow was used. Try something out with low loads in a nno-critical setup. Out in the open where it could be seen and the details worked out. Same now. Like treebilly said.

Yup a con of being an employee...show boss a vid or two of the product being used..hopefully that would build confidence in the piece of gear....keep trying...many new tools are not for everyone.....
