A series of poor decisions and I've lost most of my gear in a tree

One can find some interesting types of rings, snap hooks, and other small hardware on discarded purses, belts, luggage, computer sachels, etc. We have a take-it-or-leave-it at our local recycle yard where this is a small mountain of this stuff for free. I got some lovely tiny brass snaphooks off an all-leather woman's purse last week, exact miniatures of the usual style of big ones and solid brass. Nice small brass D-rings too, on the same purse. I have some nice stainless D-rings too from the same recycle pile. A lot of this purse and belt hardware is junk of course, some sort of plated pot metal, but much of it is not. There are women's purses, leather briefcases, and luggage that cost a small fortune and have really quality hardware, and sometimes end up discarded the same place as the crap ones. I have gotten some rather strange looks from other guys while digging thru the purses, however!

I was about to say pretty much what you just said. Some of the best D rings that I have found came from a free Husky tool bag. I also salvaged some nice welded rings off a duffle that Wesspur sells.
