$8.00 Big Shot that works!

Check this out.
the head is a tool rack like for hanging shovels or tools against a wall, bought at Home Depot for 6 bucks.
The tubing is surgical tubing which prob. wont hold up too long but a person could buy the replacement rubbers for the BigShot from a tree care supply store. The pocket is just duct tape and string. The tubing is one piece with the pocket centered in the middle of the tubing.
The pole is a whittled down piece of CA bay laurel. (kind that Fred Flintstone would use)

The hanger is the kind that folds into the upright position when you dont have a tool hanging from it.

The ends of the hanger are coated with rubber from the factory which makes it great for putting the tubing on as their is little cutting action right at the ends of the rods.

What is real interesting (to me anyway) is when you release the throw bag, the hanger will flip around the pole. What happens is the tubing releases the bag in a very very gentle way because the hanger sorta catapolts the bag around as the hanger goes into the folded up position.
when you release the official Big Shot, the tubing whips and snaps, which may reduce the power of the throw. I say this because even using this weak surgical tubing and this set up, this $8.00 big shot really goes a long way up the tree.
In addition, the wide spread of the hanger arms make for real easy aiming, much easier than with the offical big shot.

Man That\'s CHEAP

You must be as cheap*&^ed as I am. I love the idea, I have actually been thinking about something very simular, but it looks like that will work. How high did you get and what size bag did it throw?

Here's some links for the spectra thread that I use to sew my own friction savers by hand. The spectra won't work in my sewing machine, although this lady's ebay shop has some kevlar thread I am gonna order to try it out. She also has some good deals on pulleys too.

I have attached a pic of one of my fav FC

I used the heaviest bag I have I think a 16oz. but I 'll check to make sure. Shot it about a 100'.

Re: Man That\'s CHEAP

Back in junior high school, a buddy had one of these wrist rockets.

The pouch was held into the separate pieces of tubing with some split, barbed, plastic inserts. I had several inches of reach more than he did, and when I pulled it back one time to launch whatever it was we were shooting, one of the plastic bits either broke or pulled out, or the tube broke, I forget, but I still have the dent in my jawbone some 30 years later.

Can you all understand my reluctance to get one of the bigshots?

Re: Man That\'s CHEAP

Hi,

Just asking if any of you guys have ever tried to get a bag or arrow with line up a tree with a crossbow? I have a crossbow i hardly use anymore. So using it to get a line shot up looks cool to me. If no expierence with it i must try to find out myself..... (only problem i can think of is that crossbows are waepons in the netherlands and you need a permit. This also counts for the bigshot!)

Jeez, there has to be some kind of irony there. You can legally buy weed /forum/images/graemlins/kos.gif but you need a permit for a slingshot /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

At least one part of that makes sense /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ha. That is odd.

I'm on my way over!

I strongly advice you not to climb when blowing some weed /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif. That ends up hurting i'm sure! /forum/images/graemlins/bangtard.gif

To use a slingshot in work can be seen as a tool for the job. But often dutch police is not that smart and call it simply a weapon. I have had the same discussions about my axes and other tools in my van when beeing stopped on a friday or saterday night going out in the city. (they told that going out with those items in the van they see it as possible weapons and burglary tools. /forum/images/graemlins/9lame.gif)

Re: Man That\'s CHEAP

I've never used a crossbow for setting lines. Some of the folks in the west where there are bigger trees use them. One disadvantage is that you can't set the height of the shot. It's everything or nothing. A heavier arrow could be used I guess.

Crossbows, slingshots and the BD are considered weapons in national forests. There are rangers that have gotten a bit sideways about climbers using them.
