72’ backyard lift - CMC vs Platform

It works.... so far. That picture was taken on day one. Have a bit of tie down work to do and see if the DW will fit on the back but it rides nice and it’s not banging the trees going down the road at 10’5”
Oh and fab work for a block rack in the SD but we are in the design/fab stages of that now! ;)

Is that a flat bed body? Like what the tow companies use??

Yeah. We rented one of these lifts a few times locally before we decided to buy. They hauled it around on one of these. So we bought the lift in December and a trailer to get us going for a few months until we could find something like this. Works pretty good. We just need to work through tying down options as the chains and binders we had for the trailer aren’t ideal.

I demoed the CMC arbor pro 72’ not a fan of the foot pedal and sensors. Have also heard some negative feed back so I ended up buying the Easy Lift 70-36a after speaking to several owners who had no negative feed back. I’m getting it this week so I can post review later. They are pricey but what isn’t in this industry.

This convo is very enlightening. Speeding up crane removals is a primary goal as well as taking climbers out of sketchy climbs. The low cost of the wheeled lift is tempting. I’ll look more into the Qs you guys have brought up think about our most common use case. Space is very limited in our market so the footprint on a job site really matters.

Each model have different features
Which make me think some are better than others on all makes

Yup,. CMC has nice features when they run.

UpE seems to have good customer service and machine is lightest of the class. Didn't look at these close enough to say more.

Plantform Basket seems most reliable, but heavy for it's class. Although I said previously built like a tank, out rigger guards are solid, not just a "add on shield" and no remote control, hard wired.

I'm leaning to Platform for me, durability seems tops in tree business.

We're all taking a bit of a chance with these evolving machines and high prices. Too many dead ash trees in backyards, gotta go with one.

We have been renting a Bil Jax 55, minor issues, lighter, cheaper, seems to handle inclines better than the sd64s, I am worried about tracked machines, do they tear up yards? if we need to put mats down, it will slow the process even more, we do not do large removals
we will be buying a machine this year, how about Omme?

The Bil Jax sets up better on hills than the Nifty, but the Bil Jax is famous for electrical and electronic problems. We use one also, and it’s generally a great machine, when it’s working.

They will tear up any yard if driven aggressively. I have been using 6 sheet of 1/2" plywood. In places of hard turn you can do a 360 on one 4x8' sheet and not even touch the grass. Bill out your time for the highway, it's all part of the job.

So your guy was sloppy and you blame the trailer?
I understand wet tracks on new powder coat is as slick as dog snot on a door knob. I have welded nuts on my trailer ramps and have had 0 slippage.

The previous owner of our lift slipped it off the ramps once, and dented the edge of one of the aluminum ramps, but did not roll the lift. We have a procedure that eliminates that from happening, the lift must be lined up straight with the ramps before the tracks touch the ramps, and then it is driven straight up onto the trailer, in one motion, at its slowest speed. Any adjustments necessary are made after the lift is completely on the trailer deck.

Another thought would be to weld 1” or 1 1/2” angle iron guardrails onto the ramps to make it much more difficult to slip the tracks sideways off the ramps.

I really like our truck setup
I believe it’s the best way to load and unload using the outriggers

Easiest on the under carriage, boom, takes the chances of sliding on a ramp especially parking on in level ground Also keeps the lift out of the elements especially in the winter

Does anyone use this technique for loading on a trailer?
I would think it’s even easier than my truck setup because of my truck deck is very narrow to get the lift centered and a trailer it can be off a little bit more

I blame the guy mostly. If you have a tilt trailer don't think this would have happened.I just worked at this tree service it was not my equipment.

What ever lift you get I would recommend a tilt trailer. Not one with ramps this is what happened it was wet and the guy was in a hurry.
I'll bet that was a bad day to be on the jobsite.

I remember the first time I flipped my mini and I thought that was a big deal. Easily back to vertical and started back up after letting it sit for a bit. I imagine this lift took a bit more work and inspections.
