54.6 Kilometers

Well I ran my first ultra of the year today. A 6 hour timed event. 54.6 Kms with just minutes until the cut off. I had 23 minutes left to make the last 4.2 K loop. Pretty good to be able to run that speed after 5.5 hrs.

Are you a full time tree guy?

Treework takes alot of energy and needless to say so do ultras. How do you combine the two?

I am a full time tree guy but I work for a municipality. A lot of bucket work and the chippers all have winches. I do have my own "side gig" as well. I find a good hard day on Saturday actually is good for Sundays training. For Ultras you have to train tired as you will become tired after a few hours. Most Ultra runners will have long runs on Sat and Sun I climb trees instead on Sat. Also I make sure I have enough guys on the ground that I don't do much brush draging.

How far have you gone in other ultras?

Is it in the woods or on roads or what?

What about the Western States, have you done it or is it on your list to do?

My farthest is fifty miles through the nastiest trails I've ever seen. That is when my running buddies started to call me the Pheniox as I had hernia surgery 2 months before it. The six hour was on road. On may 24 there is a local 100 miler I am planning on doing it is on a fairly nice trail with some challanging hills. I plan on doing a fifty miler and a hundred kilometer during training for the big one. Western States....maybe one day it is actually not very easy to get into that one you have to enter a lottery and have your name picked.

How far do you train in a week?

What kept you from running since November?

Does running help with your treework? And vice versa (beyond making you tired going in, mentioned above)?

What part of Canada are you from? Is it hard to train in the ice and snow?

My training is probably not your usual Ultra schedule. With work and family I do what I can, when I can. During the week I do three 10 K runs in the morning before work. On the other 2 days I swim for an hour about 80-90 lengths. Usually work on Saturdays takin daown the big ones. Sundays are the most important running day where I will do between 20-60 K. When I go really long I usually try to do it at night (good practice for the hundred miler). As I get closer to the hundred I may cut out swimming and add runs. I will also have a few longer runs of 50 miles and max out at 100 K.

I did do a little running in December, just not what I am used to. Probably half what I normally do and missed a few long runs because I had to drive a plow truck at work.

Ya, I believe running realy helps with the long days. I can go for a long time after everyone else is dragging their butts.

Southern Ontario, so today pretty much all the snow melted. But the snow and ice do cause problems especially since I prefer to run in the trails. If it is bad out we have a pretty good treadmill at work that I use.

What's a Pheniox?
