460 Performance Mods

I talked to a Professional faller while I was cutting with them on a fire in California a couple of weeks ago, about his 460 he was using. It was bored and ported also and he also said with "some other features", (guess they were ultra top secret??
I have been using my saw stock, but can really see the benefit from the work he had done. So what would be the most beneficial for increasing the power output? I know in a previous post Bull said a Dual Port Cover #1128 140 0801 for starters. What would be next on the list? What benefit would I gain from having the saw ported and what is invovled?
Thanks

Go with the dual port muffler! Other mods will not pay for themselves plus you take the risk of having your 460 butchered!

If you go with a repuatable buildr it will not be butchered!

I run a few modified saws, and have no issues. A new 460 is a little over $800, a new 660 is over $1100. The 660 is much heavier. A modded 460 will run about $250 extra to post and polish and whatever other work the builder does, and it will be lighter. It wont pull a 36" bar, but it will keep up just fine to a 28" bar or so. Depends on who builds it.

TreeCo.
Have you had some bad experiences with modded saws? Who built them?

Bull:
As you can see from my post I ordered the dual port cover, so I'll see how that does. Will I have to reset my carb adjustments after insatllation??
Who would you recommend to do work like that?? I have no one in this area that does that (to my knowledge).

Yes richen the carb 1/8-1/4 turn, listen for a four stroke sound. If you dont know how to do that google saw carb tuning.

There is noone I would recommend in your area, and the guy who builds my saws wont do anyone elses......he does maybe 3 a year for "others" than his close friends, family, and himself. PM me and ill tell you a couple good guys to go to.

[/ QUOTE ] Boston ,you often have to quote Dan because he has a known tendency to delete his posts if they don't seem agreeable .

Dan wouldn't know a ported saw from a bottle of port wine by his own admission .

How some ever most people are tickled to death by the increase of performance from just a simple muffler modification and really don't want much else . So that said I partially agree with him ,which I try and make a point never to do but will make this exception .

As far a Stihl 460 ,darned good saw .Like any Stihl they run good right out of the box but also respond well to modifications if that is what the owner so desires .

Who's modded your saws? Thought so.

If you are just getting a 460 for the first time and new. I would just go the stock stihl DP muffler cover option first. Then if you still are wanting more power after a few tanks and break in, then start searching for a good builder or search and learn to do your own woods porting.
Choose your builders carefully IMHO!
