40 ton and spider legs

This is a vid of a 40 ton w/jib removing an oak behind the house. This pick was blind and the cutter was communicating with the crane operator via 'direct Connect'. Most picks were in the 80 to 100' radius. This one is about 85'. Crane was good for 3,000# and that's what the piece weighed. Three spider legs on a 2" screw pin shackle set on the hook. The spider legs are all on the 'bow' and tied with double cloves. This was the only vid I could get (working between the rain drops).

Norm ,
Do you use Amsteel for your spider legs ? I made a bunch of Tenex , they work well . I saw the Amsteel at the Expo , and someone there said they are slippery. I wasn't so much worried about the cost . Is that why you tied the double clove, because they are slippery , or is it that they are slippery and you have to make the splice deeper ? That rope seems too strong to be true .

Glenn, I do have some Amsteel legs (1/2" & 5/8"). I have them in 20' & 30' lengths. We seem to use the 20 footers more often, but use the 30's on a regular basis. We use both Tenex and Amsteel, it depends on the load. Yesterday we did some Siberian elms with a 35 ton and lifted a 6,000 stump with 1 of the 5/8 Amsteel legs (sorry, no pics). All lifts were over the house. Plus, we were working in close proximity to an uncoated single phase primary, another great reason to use synthetics; the crane's load line has to stay 10' away. We tie the Amsteel, and all legs, with double cloves, always. Abrasion resistance on the Amsteel is outstanding. We have used the 1/2" legs for well over 100 lifts and the abrasion is pretty much non existent. I highly recommend Amsteel for spider legs. In my opinion, this is a perfect application for Amsteel. Just make sure it is a "Class II" splice, 2 fid full volume bury followed by the tapered bury. I can post pics of the Amsteel legs if you want.

I'm sold Norm . The Tenex does get roughed up a bit, being such a tough guy rope . Santa's gonna bring me a spool of 5/8 Amsteel . I'm gonna get some of that endurabraid too , I've been good.

Any reason for not using a clove and two half hitches?

Same thing Mahk. If you look at the TDS product, it is actually a 'double clove'.

Oh. So 'Double' refers to the clove hitch on the log and the clove hitch on the standing part of the rope? I thought you meant that you actually made two separate clove hitches on the log.
